Surely the coolent should run out in the reserve tank before the level drops in the main system! I am confused pls help.

Can someone pls explain why my coolent level keeps dropping under the pressure cap but not in the reserve tank?
This doesn't make sense to me. Surely the coolent should run out in the reserve tank before the level drops in the main system!

It is normal not to be able to see any coolant when removing the pressure cap. If it comes into view when you squeeze the broad rubber hose leading off the neck then it's OK.
I can't explain why this should be either.

I think its because the coolant finds its own level between the filler neck and the expansion bottle- so fluid that you put into the filler neck will 'level' out to the same level in the expansion bottle.

If you cant see coolant in the filler neck fill it up. Check again a few days later and fill again if necessary, if it still drops you have a leak. Ideally the level should be right up there. Mine is always right up to the top of the filler neck. Check the jubilee clips are tight on all the hoses as this was where mine was leaking from.
