My PS3 dvd rom died!!!

Post by James »

The drive just stopped playing discs after I did the 3.01 update and launched COD MW2.
Gutted, only got one game in online and then it hung.
On restart it refuses to read any disc what so ever. Games, bluray etc.

Tried accessing the sys restore launch menu and tried restoring file system etc to no avail.

Thats 2 xbox 360s and 1 ps3 that have died on me :?

I cant find any details on 3.02, any ideas what day next week or is it unknown?
man i hope it fixes it.
Sounds like a dead motor - you get a click and no spin. But it could be firmware - as it drives the hardware...
Cant be burnt out as i havent used it enough

I have unlisted it in ebay as it seems alot of peole have reported the same problem since 3.01 update.

My ps3 is a very early Jap one (20 gig, no wifi etc) and it has a different drive to later models which is probably where the problem lies.

Cheers for the new firmware heads up

Hopefully with cross-game chat this time.

Regarding the DVD drive not working there was a few reports scatterted across the net of v3.01 causing this problem when it first came out (and the reason i didn't update) until last night as MW2 required it.

Cool, Don't see the point in them including paedobook at all. More media attention for Sony for the wrong reasons TBA if you ask me.

I wouldn't be too surprised if we get a spate of bluray drive failures after MW2.

WTF is going on with all the drive accesses during online play?
It's not like it's streaming graphics from the disc, as it occurs even when you're stood still

Last night my PS3 sounded louder than a Xbox 360 when i was playing MW2!

I was seriously considering contacting Sony to say my PS3 was dying but going by this thread its the MW2 game that is the issue rather than the PS3 itself... :-k

An option to install to harddrive might be a good idea.
Can't be more than 4.5GB as that's the limit for 360 games

I dont think the bluray killer is due to cod mw2 loading, its more the system updates - 3.00 and 3.01

It seems newer PS3's are ok and its only the older ones that are affected (40 gb and older)

Mine stopped working 3 mins into my first COD MW2 game and I had created the game so it was just me in there.

Cant believe Sony havent commented on the issue.

Some of my 360 games have been around 6gb

Obviously I have one myself and wouldnt wish it upon anyone, but it just shows, even the great and mighty Sony PS can xxxx up as well. Perhaps some of the PS3 fanboi's (not you guys) might get off the 360's case a little bit now.

Hopefully someone like Xecuter will come up with a fix and create a cheap kit to fix your own.

Doesn't sound like Sony are willing to fix your console when things do go wrong from what I've seen on here. Perhaps they'll change that stance with some bad press.
