[Mk2] [Turbo] no sign of my powerFC, what other ECUs are available?? frustrated!

Post by jimGTS »

ok ive bought and payed for a new power FC, ive been waiting on its arrival for 2 months now.
still no sign of it. to cut a long story short, suppliers let my supplier down, theyve had to order directly off of apexi and its taking ages.

ive been offered a full refund numerous times, but ive clung onto the hope of it turning up.
now im just getting peed off.

what other choices do i have? that arnt going to cost me an arm and a leg??

motec, sounds way to expensive
link G4 is it? cant find any suppliers for these for the mr2, and price, cant find prices either
solaris, also sounds way to expensive

other option, buy secondhand?
never see these ECUs secondhand either anymore...

last case senario
fit some stock injectors and run low-ish boost on the stock ecu until one turns up.
but like i say, ive been waiting 2 months already, and none of these ecus have turned up in the for sale section of any of the mr2 forums in that time either!

You'll get Link prices from Thor Racing (UK distributors for Link I believe). I got my G3 XLEM from Rogue who can also supply any of the Link gear.

I used Lyndon for mapping mine at Race Shack in Tewkesbury :thumleft:

A mate of mine got his from ATS in the US - and this was only in the last few months.

AFAIK, Apexi "temporarily" discontinued it - so, they stopped making it - and they would start again when a big enough order came in. This happened with ATS and a few other places in the US buying a batch - so, Apexi made more.

So, at the mo, there are whatever is left out there with suppliers - unless another big buy comes in from UK, US, Japanese suppliers.

Anyway, maybe try some of the US suppliers and see what stock they have left. Although, might work out expensive with import duty etc

ill have to ask what they want for one without all the bits they supply and the base maps they supply. (not something i want to buy or pay for)

Why not try Link in NZ for the Link, save yourself a fortune. Some guy with a 1mz in a Celica got a G4 Storm landed for £590 all in.

I would keep clear of Thor at all costs, a friend is having major problems with them.
With ECUs you get what you pay for so I would go for the Motec got to be the best make out there.

i have and only thing he can help with is the solaris

and really, i havent a huge spec and not looking for 600+hp, seems a bit OTT for my setup. only want to creep near or past 400flywheel.
cant justify 2k on a ecu and map!

I'm not questioning that newer ECU's have much more functionality and this question is coming from someone who has never done any ECU tuning etc - but if you take out Anti-lag, launch-control, WI control, VVTi and so on, what exactly is the PowerFC lacking ?

I am in the same boat as Jim - probably "just" looking for around the 340/350whp. The PowerFC is proven on cars well past that power level.

The 3s-gte is relatively dated too ! :)

Tuning resolution, input/outputs and the ability to alter fuelling/ignition based on custom inputs.

But will those features be say the difference between getting 350whp out of a setup and getting 360whp out of a setup ?

What I am getting at is - are all those features really needed to get 350whp ?

I'd rather pay £600 and get 350whp, than to pay £1500 and get 360whp.

Forgive my ignorance but I'm not clued in to all the features you mentioned.

Just has a look at the Solaris and it looks great and not too expensive.
I feel that is the one to go for.

It's not about overall power, higher resolution mapping mean better drivability off boost and MPG, two things which for a lot of people who use their cars daily are pretty important.

Regarding inputs and outputs, lets say you have water/meth injection. You could run a sensor that tells the ECU that the water has run out. The ECU would use one map, optimised for the water/meth, until the sensor reads empty, then switch to a different map, safe for operating without water/meth.

I've an AEM on my MR2 and really like it. It had a steep learning curve, but now I find it really intuitive. There are TOO MANY options though.

I have 3 Emerald ECU's on various other cars, and I really like them too. They also have good support.

DTA is also good - and not dear.

You say that, but when I spoke to Ryan, he recommended me the Power FC over the Links or any of the other lower end ones. He seemed to rate them well.

I've been looking at a lot of ECU's too.

For what it's worth the Motec is obviously the dog danglies, but as said very expensive. On the face of it the Solaris and AEM units seem to have much of the functionality but at a lower cost.

I've struggled to get much feedback on the Solaris unit (other than talking to Ryan and the guys who developed it), I don't think it has been picked up widely enough by the tuning community yet. Certainly worth talking to Ryan about though- he loves it.

I've heard really good things about the AEM unit...have a chat with Dan at Advance Motorsport about it for more info (but he will try to sell it to you!). I think the retail was £1,300+ VAT.

Not sure that helps much...hopefully just adds some weight to what you've found out already :thumleft:
