[Mk2] [Turbo] Downpipe..... is it worth it without a new exhaust??

Post by GTSAARON »

I have searched and there are lots of threads on exhausts and downpipes, but what I am wondering is, due to my limited budget (xmas round the corner) is it worth fitting a de-cat and keeping the standard zaust or is it pointless unless you swap the whole lot for a more free flowing unit?

I suppose what I am saying is what gives the best gains between just the de-cat and a new exhaust??

I also have a TRD backbox which looks really nice, which would be nice to keep :)

The car is a Rev 3 Tubby btw :)

Can't say how much but you will defo see small gains throughout the rev range plus the turbo will spool faster, keeping the standard exhaust will be ok for just now, best bang for buck is upping the boost Btw :-k

Yeah, you get a small boost gain from doing the downpipe too, as it removes the biggest restriction in the exhaust (except for the turbine lol).

If you want a cheap one, ive got a crack repaired Auzzie which I had on my rev3 turbo.

You will see a nice power bump from just a downpipe upgrade. The exhaust upgrade will net some good results as well. Both are very worthwhile upgrades, and don't have to be done at the same time.

downpipe releases more horses than an exhaust so its still well worth doing

I was lucky enough to buy my car with a single exit Apexi N1 which is very free flowing.
I kept the stock cat but gutted it.
You probably get about 75+% of the gain given by replacing the downpipe with an after market one.
I chose the gutted stock downpipe for reliability as some aftermarket pipes can crack which is a PITA.

My rev 3 was running 266bhp before I bought it with cat pipe and only apexi exhaust and HKS induction.

Now it's gutted, fully serviced properly and with an Apexi induction kit I'm hoping I'll be 270+bhp.....and I have the charge cooler conversion coming soon....then the boost control....I'm still on factory settings. :D

Can always fit the downpipe now, then just buy/fit the exhaust when you have the cash :thumleft:
