HELP! buying a mk2 and need advice!

Post by lemonyfresh »

Hi people, im new to the forum (:S) but have been after a mk2 for ages :D
just a quick question, i have seen a good looking GT on pistonheads - seems ok, but just one issue.....

its a 98' uk spec car on an S reg, but there is no airbag?!??!?! either im going insane and the style of the wheel is different - or there is something else going on here... hmm

heres the link http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1234033.htm :|

the reason i am asking is that its a tad far to go JUST to be dissapointed :( Any answers are much appreciated
thank you

You're right, that's not the original steering wheel for a UK rev5 :?

So what's the reason for the change of steering wheel?

he thinks its a late rev 4 (poss) and the wheel was on it when HE bought it - quite a nice bloke tbh, hes hpi checked it before and its come back clear, not cat C or D or anything really as it shouldnt be, given me all the service details and all the photos i asked for (LOADS). I'll hpi it again to be safe, but i imagine it was the previous owners choice for some reason. (do ALL rev 4's have driver airbag wheels?) I was going to change it anyway :P, so it doesnt matter too much.

in that caaaaaaase..... can anyone suggest a decent wheel? Not too mad on the money - some of the momo ones look sweet :D
And also i have seen a set of alloys (sparco n1) that dont appear to be sold anymore? (am i right?) if so where could i get them, as they are UBER

It's definitely a rev5, dials & speed flaps give that away.

UK rev4 had the same wheel as the UK rev5 anyway.

If you see it, you might want to check under the front bonnet for damage just in case. But might be that a previous owner had an aftermarket wheel.

No UK mk2's got passenger airbags, that was just imports (rev4+)

cool beans, thanks for that one, i didnt think about the previous previous owner :P that would make sense! i asked the seller to send me quite a few pics of the front storage area the other day so i could check before i go see it and it LOOKED fine... i'll check again face to metal as it were.

im going to go view it tomoro and (hopefully) make a decision \:D/

Nah, it should have the red stitched gear shift knob and air bag steering wheel.

His is on a S plate so really can't be a late rev4, late rev 4's were on a R plate.

Mines a late R plate and it has the a red stitched gear shift knob and air bag steering wheel.

The owner b4 may have changed the wheel and not put back the original back on and he prob sold the rev 5 wheel.

Looks like it has been modded b4 due to smoothed front bumper and ICE.

i cant believe how many replies my thread is getting! thanks everyone!

anyway... ive HPI checked it now and its absolutley spot on. the aftermarket gearknob and wheel theory makes sense and it almost looks like all there is to do is drive the thing!
cant wait for tomoro to come around now!

Just check the front top mounts as they are prone to going, also bushes/droplinks etc.

will do :)

as for alloy wheels, it has some...... wolfrace...... from halfords on it i think - how deep a dish can you actually get on the rears of an mr2 without bigger arches? ive seen some team dynamics wheels that look quite cool and they are available in up to nine inches, was just wondernig if they would fit? or even if they are any good :S (if not any suggestions)
