[Mk2] [Turbo] Installing aftermarket induction kit [JOB DONE]

Post by sw20GTS »

First of all, let me apologize if this question seems a bit trivial but I really need some help since I'm a noob at things like this.

I read the guide on how to install an induction kit on the knowledge base
here. However, when I went to have a look at my engine I noticed that the pipings and connections are not the same. I reckon the guide was showing the steps for an NA MR2 ( http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/kb.php?mode=article&k=2 )

I have gone an ordered an Blitz LM induction kit for MR2 Turbo ( http://www.templetuning.co.uk/blitz-lm- ... 1405-p.asp ) but I am not sure if there's instructions that will come with it. I Googled and can't seem to find any good guides relevant to what I am doing.

Just a bit worried since the piping looks pretty complicated thus I am hoping anyone here would know of a good guide or perhaps some tips? A guide with some pictures will be godsend if available.

Should have gone with an APEX'i instead !

This should help you tho, its quite easy.

http://www.turbomr2.com/MR2/HowTo/APEXi ... Intake.htm

If you got an rev3 some of the pipes/connectors will be different.
But the basics stays the same.
(you can even leave the side covers on)

Thanks a lot mate! :thumleft:

Was looking at the Apexi one as well but choose Blitz coz I have some blue theme going on in my engine bay :P I was originally going for the SUS kit but its way too expensive so settled for this one.

Well, from the pic of the kit doesn't look like much to do compared to the SUS kit.

I got a blue car, and blue hoses ;)

Still choose the APEX'i due to best filtering.
Besides, the red filter can't be seen from the top, due to the rainshield which is sitting above it ;)

Heck, as long you'r happy with it :thumleft:

Get a picture up afterwards 8)

Ah fair play then mate :D To be REALLY honest I was a bit drunk when I purchased it. I was mainly looking at the prices but it just hit me when you mentioned that its just a few quid difference :D

Yeah I think I will post a pic in the garage thingy and maybe link it here if I manage to get it fitted :P Coming tomorrow...

Btw, anyone actually installed this kit before? Wondering if there's any instructions with it or do I just have to guess how to fit it? :pale:

There'll be instructions with it, but as is the way they'll more than likely be in japanese only  pictures are normally good enough to follow though :thumleft:

Phew, at least there are pictures :P

Hopefully not much work :(

I'm pretty sure the Apexi ones come with English instructions though my mate had one on his evo.

i used to have an APEXI in mine but have now changed to an ARC (actually is not genuine my mate made it for me by copying a real one) :thumleft: as the APEXI seemed to draw in hot air of the engine bay,
i have polished & sprayed mine in metallic blue today as was getting dirty

I know ARC > APEX'i

Never said APEX'i to be the best for an MR2, only mentioned better filtering
Besides, your filter will heatsoak aswell

I do believe ARC is the best for an MR2

Uhm, tarmac. So the whole box is selfmade from scrap? Any tips/hints/pics?
And the filter itself, is, original?

Yeah, just finished installing the kit. Took a while since its my first time plus I was clumsy enough to drop a tool down the engine bay where its PITA to reach. Hardest part was removing the CAI since it takes some maneuvering unless you take other parts out.

The original intake kit was kinna heavy too so I guess I saved some weight there :P And yes, it will probably heatsoak. I wished the tubing is longer so the cone could be placed closer to the side vents.

So anyway, I reset the ECU and took her for a drive on some B roads. I noticed difference in power. Acceleration is better now not as sluggish as better plus I noticed in 1st and 2nd my factory boost gauge actually went all the way up. Noticed also that the exhaust note is louder though now.

Could have sworn 0-60 times improved as well. I reached 60 barely into 2nd. Unless of course my speedo is still in kmh :P

Only thing I am a little bit worried is the dump valve. It sounded louder as well and a bit like an explosion on boost. Instead of Pssshhh... its PPPPPPPSSSHTTTtttsSShhh :P Will check if there's any leak or anything tomorrow.

Conclusion:
Can't expect more for the price I paid. Definitely noticed improvement in performance. Wished the the location of the filter is better to minimize heatsoak. Or at least some kind of heat shield should be provided.

What did you use to polish that mate? I need mine looking like that!

i started with 800 grit paper then 1000 grit (wet) then 1500(wet) then 2000(wet) then finally 2500(wet)the only reason i used the paper was mine had heavy scratches in the metal, then polish brushes (3 hard medium & finally soft brush) you can normally buy this from a good motor bike shop, then after all that autosol polish :thumleft:

if you was to make one your self the best way is to borrow an original as i did & copy it mate :thumleft: well worth doing the filter is actaully an RX7 genuine HKS filter which fits perfict ,dont ask me why but if you buy the one to fit the MR2 it is alot more money about right for most MR2 parts lol
the apexi is a good filter but at my level of performance (400 +)some say it is restrictive on flow :-k also the arc may heat soak a little but what it wont do is suck in hot air of the engine :thumleft:
