Check Engine Light Help

Post by MattTodd »

Hi Guys,

I need some help from people who know MR2's lol.

My friend recently bought a rev1 MR2. 48 hours later, it span a bearing.

He bought a new bare engine, which turned up in a box, and I removed his old engine, swapped over all the ancilleries, bar the air-con which we ditched, and refitted the new engine to the car.

I've now connected everything back up, and the car starts on the turn of a key, the engine sounds great, there are no un-toward noises. However...

The check engine light is on, and the car is very obviously down on power. Do these cars have a sort of "limp home" / "safe mode" they go into? How do you read codes on the car?

The car runs very well at idle, and revs ok, I've not revved it past 5K yet as it's a new engine, and we're running it in still, but it seems to rev freely enough, it just isn't making good power at all. Comparatively, it probably isn't much quicker than my 1.0 106 commuter at the moment.

Any clues guys?

In the engine bay will be a small black plastic box with "Diagnostic" written on it. Pop the cover off and short out the two pins marked "e1" and "te1" with a paper clip or something similar.

The CEL light in the dash will then report back a code by way of a sequence of flashes. For example flash flash flash.....pause....flash meaning 31.

Compare the code it gives you to the list here;

And you're away :thumleft:
