Mk1.5 aka Penelope

For those of you that don’t know Penelope is my 1989 Mk1 mr2 and has been an on going project for the last 5 or 6 years.

Fitted with a 3s-gte engine and box fitted from a rev2 MR2 turbo by Woodsport which @14spi of boost produces nearly 300bhp and with up-to 100bhp of nitrous.

Chassis and brakes

Front Brakes:
Celica gt4 st205 brake conversion including calipers and disc's TRD pads 3mm larger supra studs and 3mm spacers
rear Brakes:
MR2 SW20 rev 3 calipers and vented disc's
Koni adjustable shocks and fensport uprated springs
Polly bushes fitted all round
larger Adjustable White line front and rear adjustable anti roll bars
adjustable drop-links front and rear
adjustable rear tie bars
17inch Kosei wheels with 205/40/17 (front) 215/45/17 (rear) tyres

Interior

Cussco roll cage
Cobra sebring race seats with outlast technology
Cobra 5 piont harness
cussco short shift
stereo junked and replaced with nitrous arming switch,speed delimiter and activation switch.

This is my fastest time so far down the quarter mile strip and this was at rotor stock august 2007 at Santa pod :

I’ve already posted a few pics of this on TB but a managed to get down to the car and do some work on it this weekend, I’ve had the rear boot lid replaced as the one I was using had a mk1 side vent in the top that used to be used for the intercooler I had in the boot.

But I’m now using a charge cooler from an st205 Celica in the engine bay, so the vent wasn’t serving any purpose so i had a standard boot lid sprayed and fitted again without a spoiler, the guys who sprayed and fitted my new boot lid said I could keep the car there a a little longer so I could do some odd jobs that needed doing the only problem being it’s was a little dusty !





I replace the bottom arms with new two’s are us stainless jobbies and fitted new drop links as the drop links that I’d made myself kind of bent into an “S” shape



Then while the car was up in the air I droped the under trays and checked the car over for rust! Luckily (very luckily) none was found so I wire brushed the old lose under seal and added some fresh where it was needed!

I also plan to carpet the rear boot so while I had the chance I sprayed clear wax oil everywhere I could, bloody messy stuff but will be covered with the carpet:



I just need to get down there now and give the car a good wash and polish ready for an MOT as I think It’s just ran out!

plus i need to get her 4 wheel Aliened,so if anyone knows of anywhere good around the midlands i can take the car to i'd be most greatful,cheers

Have you got a few pictures of your bonnet vent when opened, i'm planning on this for mine as a winter project!

heres some pics of the bonnet when it was first done,it was fabbed up from scratch.

i'll get some of more of it on the car when i next go down to do some work on it !

If it helps BSM's MK1.5 has a similar front vent, I expect there are probably pics on TB.

No problem I’ll get some of the bulkhead for you the next time I go down to the car, from what I can remember there has been two rectangles cut out in the bulk head corresponding to the vents in the bonnet .I think we did it this way as it gave a lot more strength to the bulk head it’s self! (Rather than cutting out one big hole in the bulkhead)

Yeah if you do a bit of searching on TB you’ll find there’s loads of mk1’s that have had the bonnets modified in one way or another

Got p back at home now and finally got to give the car a good wash and polish.

Few pics of the back end, I think it makes the car look a lot more old skool and rather sexy!, although 2 passing school kids commented “man that cars sick!” then the other in reply “nah man that cars f****** ugly” ha ha you can’t beat kids for saying how it is

As I said not really a lot to see :LOL: the yellow pipes are for the charge cooler, going to the charge cooler pump ( I think you can just see it in the corner of pic)

I’ve seen it done lots of different was a lot of people use alloy to make some ducting up and to seal around where I’ve cut it out. Also I think on TB there’s someone making a fiberglass/carbon vent you can fasten into the bonnet, might be worth a look.

I think maybe if I was to do another car I’d us alloy in the frunk to make the ducking up to the underneath of the bonnet then just cut a rectangle out in the bonnet to the same shape and to line up with the ducting, then I would perhaps get a subtle grill of some sort fasted to the bonnet.

ha ha I was going though some stuff and a found a disc with some old photo's on ! It doesn’t take a lot but i got quite exited as I found these pics from 2003/2004:

Penelope being sprayed pink for the first time way back in 2003,was red originally but i think they sprayed it white first as an undercoat/covers better or something :













also found this which i think is quite a cool pic not sure if i've posted it up before if i did it was ages ago:



found a few from MR2004 as well,OMG over 5 years ago :

P was still a 1.6 at the time and was rocking the standard tear drops painted graphite grey with a polished lip and silver wipers (mmm not sure about that one )

I was planning on doing the rectangle out of the bonnet and alloy ducting up to it thing!

I got pointed in the way of the carbon inserts at JAE, think i may hold out for them!
