[Mk2] [Turbo] GT2871r, any good?

Post by kev_mr2 »

Im still undecided on which turbo to go for on my build.

I had my heart set on a GT3071/6 but i think its a bit more than i need, i know i'll end up turning the boost up wit it until something goes bang lol.

Im looking to acheive around 350 whp and have been looking at the GT2871 with a 48mm housing and 0.64 trim so im not getting alot of lag.

Is this turbo capable of running that power with these supporting mods? if so what pressure will it be running at?

supporting mods are

Rev 1 Stock Engine (pistons, rods, Head etc)
Rev3 Wiring setup With Apexi Power FC management
1.2mm Cometic HG with ARP studs
Sard 800cc injectors on stock Rev1 fuel rail (am i better changing this?)
Bosch fuel pump
Side mount Intercooler (Greddy, maybe, still undecided)
Custom 3 1/2" exhaust with tubular manifold.
Blitz BOV
Custom turbo intake
HKS 264 cams
Lightened flywheel
BKR7E plugs with KV85's

i think thats all

With these mods do you think this power figure is realistic?

Any opinions/suggestions welcome

Cheers

sorry just realised the turbo is only available with a 53mm turbine wheel not a 48. im getting mixed up with the GT2860 as i was also looking at that

i will be going with the 0.64 A/R housing though

that turbo will be at its limits at 350 whp, if you don't get your engine forged though it's not going to last very long :-k

probably last longer at 340 bhp at the fly but even then there is no guarantee the engine will hold out :(

you will defo need to upgrade your fuel rail too as it won't have enough flow for the injectors, you put in a steel head gasket ?

some nice mods there mate but you will need a few more to bring everything together :eye:

thanks mate.

yeah im using a multi layered steel one from cometic

i was trying to avoid the forged build because the bottom end is in quite good condition but i suppose if i do that then i can go with the 3071/6 and acheive better figures.

i suppose the wolfkatz TFFR will do the trick for these injectors then?

If the bottom end is stock, then surely its a better idea to use a GT30 series at lower boost for that power.

2871 is a good turbo, but I reckon 400bhp at the fly is near the limit.

Right folks ive changed my mind, after seeing my mates 700+hp build yesterday it gave me some inspiration.

Not hoping for anything near that. But im gona go with a GT3076 and maybe run a charge cooler.

Is it realistic to say i can acheive 480-500whp with this setup?

I know that im gonna need to strengthen the bottom end with the likes of forged pistons but will i have to do anything else to the standard Rev 1 bottom end?

Also am i better getting a Rev 3 inlet manifold or splashing out for a custom one?

Thanks

For 500whp, you will prob need to go to a Gt35R. A 30 will need to be at a very high boost level.

if i'm looking for more power down the line can i get away with just swapping turbos, ie. will the rest of the kit match up... :-k

running a gt3076 with a t3 footprint...

sorry for the slight hijack

its fine mate atleast its on topic, anything that helps you out will help me out too.

think ill get away withthe standard manifold for the time being, maybe get it ported though, aswell as the TB etc.

The cylinder head is near complete and has had the works with the likes of oversize valves, competition springs and some nice 264 cams, also a little port and polish so that should be ok,

My thoughts are, that if i do go with the GT3076 and get the 500 mark i will deffo need forged pistons, Would i need rods aswell? twin fuel pumps maybe? and a charge cooler, aswell as the charge cooler im thinking of getting the pistons and tubular manifold thermal coated.

you can get away with standard rods but if you are going to the expense you might as well do it properly, a single fuel pump will be fine for that power/turbo.

a chargecooler or bootmount will have to be a must though but the standard manifold will work fine and be a lot stronger...

well the bottom end is going to Agra in dundee for the works

about 2k's worth. going with eagle rods and stuff. just getting everything new at the same time inc oil pump and crank oil seals etc.

Not sure wether to go with a GT30 or a GT35 yet but the power these are capable of has got me thinking.

Am i gonna run into any troubles with the gearbox coping with this? Its just had a rebuild and i dont want to risk damaging it if its just standard internals.

depends on your driving style/service intervals and luck i guess. Playing with those powers in a 2l can be a risky business...

Are you tracking it?

From what I hear, the GT28 and GT30 turbos are much more drivable on the road.

this will be used mostly on the road.

So im trying to keep as much of the car as normal as possible if you know what i mean.

Iv decided to go with the GT3582 with the .63 turbine housing and .70 compressor housing as im wanting quick spool up and still to make decent power.

Im gonna run the radtech chargecooler aswell after being in larry93's car at the weekend (thanks again lol) which gave me inspiration, i seen the benefits of this over an intercooler stuck in the boot.
