[Mk2] [Turbo] Headlight Motors stopped working

Post by Schmoot »

So I was having a little trouble with a damp Ignition coil after the rain earlier this week, but during the work I think I managed to short out something. The coil was fine, however since then my Headlight motors havent been popping up

Lights come on, they can switch to full beam and sidelights are also ok, the Motors just wont pop up.

They were working perfectly up until then too I should add.

What has also changed is, whenever the key is turned in the ignition, and the electrics turn on (and throughout any subsequent journey) there is a small whining noise coming from the frunk.

Ive identiied where this noise is coming from by taking out components one at a time and have came to the conclusion that its the small cylinder held on by a bronze bracket with a black and a white lead coming from it.

Unfortunately there is no name on the piece to identify what exactly it does but when the leads are connected it clicks and then whines constantly

All fuses are intact still as well.

In the picture below its on the Right hand side (not my car, just a generic picture)

I went to a scrapyard yesterday and tried a different one of these and a diferent retractor control module (blue rectanglular thing) however the parts were quite old and I could have been replacing my broken one with another old broken one...

Could it be this, or the retractor control? or simply some relay?

Thanks, Rich

When you first switch on your ignition your power steering pump maes the noise your describing and thats normal so be careful about rushing into replacing things that dont need doing.

Just to confiurm yiu have checked the fuse labelled RTR-35 in your frunk fuse box as thats the one for the headlight retractorts as opposed to the actual headlights?
