[Mk2] [NA] Car Stalling

Post by GHOST »

My REV3 has stalled twice in the last week. Never happened before, in fact its always started on the button and idled at around 900/1000 RPM when warmed up.

Its suddenly started to idle at 500 RPM when fully warmed up and subsequently stalls (be it infrequentely).

Strangely its only started in the last week when the weather has really warmed up.

Temp gauge is fine by the way, and otherwise the performance is unchanged.

Any advice/solutions?

May have a plug / plug lead dropping off momentarily... and causing it to stall ??! Renewed the ignition components lately ??!

Rotor cap
Rotor Arm
Plugs

As a first pass.....

When is it doing it ??! After a bit of a belt and a sudden stop ??! or just randomly cutting out ?!

It just seems to be idling lower, around 500RPM. I can actually feel it struggling a bit. Its only started doing it this last week though, could the hot weather be a factor.

The revs seem to be the problem though, just idling too low when its warm.

It only does it when I'm stopped and the revs drop.

Hot weather shouldnt affect it.. shoudl run better if anything... I'd shoot for ignition components initially.... as any breakdown in this area can cause the problems you're experiencing...

Just something on a more major scale.... I changed out a timing belt / tensioner the other week with similar symptoms.... the car started running like crap... and found the tensioner had broke - the tensioner keeps the tension tight on the timing belt.... so the mechanical timing belt driving the cams from the bottom end.... one of the cams had jumped a tooth.... which made it run lumpy / idle slower...

I'm not suggesting this is the case as the big giveaway is also excess noise coming from the timing case where the belt was flapping about....

Cheers JJ. I've had the cambelt replaced around 1000 miles ago actually. Do I look into that by taking off the cover? And if so, what am I looking for?

Took the car out for a run today and it didn't stall. Its just when I'm stopped in traffic that the revsidle at around 500RPM, otherwise its running fine.

Update on this. Been out today (not quite as warm as its been but still hot) and the car has behaved fine, idling just below 1000RPM when temp gauge up up to just below halfway.

Could it just be (my doctors favourite saying when he has no idea whats wrong with you) - 'one of those things'?

I know its been said it isn't, but could it actually be the hot weather?

To be honest even I'm finding it hard to function in it

Weird! Mine has started exactly the same although mine has not improved since its got cooler outside. Ive got a rev 3 engine as well.

I just made a post about it. Im thinking its the Idle speed control valve under the throttle body. Want to make sure first though before i rip it all apart.

Well Ghost i put a post up asking about the Idle speed control valve but nobody has replied. Ive got my MOT tomorrow so need to give the car a good checking over but hopefully if all goes well ill rip the throttle body off on Tuesday and have a look at the idle speed valve. I know there is a test for the electrical side of things but cant remember what it was and i cant seem to find it using the search function. Im pretty sure there is a common fault with one of the wires breaking.

I've had four MK2's now and I've never came across this problem before so its a new one to me. Thanks for the reply though, I'll keep my eyes on this thread. I'm hoping its not serious as my car is presently up for sale.

Still doing it ??!! Wonder if the idle control valve is partly gundged up with oil and occasionally "free's up" or in this case "sticks".

Colds starts ... does it rev above 1K ?

Well car passed MOT today only a couple of advisorys on silly things so im going to rip the throttle body apart tomorrow and give it a good cleaning out.

Yes it revs above 1k on cold. When warm it drops to around 500/600 and feels like its choking to death then next time i come to a stop im back to normal around 900 rpm and so on. On further inspection ive noticed there is a touch of oil present around the air supply pipe to the idle control valve. Im thinking its gunged up as you say and partly blocked or something like that. Need to also know why the oils getting in there in the first place. Its a low milage engine and doesnt use hardly any oil so maybe just a build up over time as i never thrash the car. Could be that it needs a right good clearing out on the motorway?

Just altered the throttle idle a little on mine so I'll see how it fairs next time I take her out. Anyone else had any changes?
