wipers

Post by carlos9999 »

anybody know how to fix the problem of the wipers lifting off the screen at around 70mph. I have spoilers on them and tried without em, but still the same. Ive heard this is a common problem. So just wondering if anyone can shed any light on the subject. Cheers. #-o

Generally caused by a weak spring in the wiper arm. I was getting the same problem with wiper lift on the driver side at around 70mph so replaced my wiper arm with a new one from Toyota, problem solved and my wipers stay on the screen up to the 90's.

Obviously I can't gurantee it will work for you, all I can say is that a new arm worked for me.

You didn't think it would be cheap from Toyota did you?

There's another trick you could try first before taking the plunge and buying a new arm and that is to bend the existing arm slightly to increase the tension of the spring. Some have reported this has worked, just depends on how weak your spring has become.

I've got a plan to look for a replacment spring when I get my hand on a wiper arm off my car. There must be others out there that size but stronger.

I tried to solve this problem last week. Its definately the spring which is the problem. I had a spear wiper arm lying about and the spring in this was alot stronger than the one on the car. I couldn't fit it though due to it being one with the screw fitment rather than the hook. Looked at removing the spring but you would need to remove a rivit thing to remove or replace spring. Don't know how you would secure it back in place.

What i ended up doing was jamming 3 washers in the gaps between the coils of the spring to hopefully increase the tension. I also gave the screen a coat of rainex. The wiper has been fine since but don't know if its the washers or rainex which solved the problem.

cheers guys for the input..!! :thumleft: its definatly sounding more and more like the spring from what you guys are telling me... i like the idea of jamming somthing like a washer in the spring to increase tension. maybe give that a go..!! and even try to bend it a little....
i'll keep you posted... when we get some rain...lol :thumleft:
