[Mk2] [Turbo] THE FACTS ON AIR SCOOPS

Post by liamdavies »

Ive read alot of different stories on the forum about toms air scoops disrupting the air flow through the engine bay is this a FACT or MYTH :-k , only the more i think about it the more i cant see it effecting it due to the shape of the engine rain cover, there is really only one way for air to come out and it is slopped down ward and offset to one side, so surly the air is just being trapped toward the back of the engine bay
Which would mean toms air scoops would help produce turbulance to assist air to come out.

Or have i got it all wronge 8-[

 @ trickster

Never since having my first MR2 in 2002 have I liked Tom's scoops.

They ruin the car in my opinion, each to their own though :)

there only functional if there fixed into a fixed airbox in an n/a ramming air into it. any other use is much argued .

mr2s cool by getting air under the car and through the side intakes and exiting through the engine cover lid , arguably these things disrupt the flow by putting air in the top.

all that aside if you like the look of them , then go for it. ive never read anything thats pointed towards these thing ruinening your engine or causeing massive engine over heating.

Well the engine is water cooled so it wouldnt overheat anyway!

However the best thing would be that the engine failed so you didnt have to look like a plnker driving around with a periscope on your mr2

Im dragging this one out now, sorry im a stock look person lol

oh dear im a plnker then or is that plonker, i love the hardcore street racer look thats why i bought a japanese sports car i love the fast and furious look thats my taste, would be very boring if we were all the same wouldnt it, the modified world would just die out i will never drive a standard car every car ive owned has been modified. thats my rant over :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

i like the look of the toms scoops, only one though, i dont like the look of two.

I have one on the nearside of my car feeding air directly to the apexi filter :thumleft:

So much conjecture around these things it’s insane – I swear this is an IMOC myth from back in the day.

How anyone can say they will do harm is beyond me?! You will be forcing more air into the engine bay which will only benefit an open air filter and intercooler – these items don’t need to be sealed off either, the fact that both the IC and an open air filter will be positioned directly under where the snorkels enter the engine bay just means they are getting ample cool air flowing through them – something which isn’t that easy in the packed MR2 engine bay.

There are a massive number of mid engined cars that have essentially the same thing with roof mounted air scoops to feed the engine with air – these cars also have side scoops and vented covers.

The Bomex scoops look better though – those TOMS snorkels looks a bit iffy.

FACT - Look ridiculous
FACT - Do nothing to cool the engine
FACT - Serve no purpose without a contained air box

FICTION - Will enhance your standing on the modification scene
