I've never done it without dropping the engine completely.

TBH by the time you've got the three mounts on te gearbox released the last one is not much more work!

It can be very tricky to get the gearbox back onto the engine once the new clutch is in, so I'd be inclined to pull the engine and gearbox completely and work on it off the car.

There's probably a guide to this somewhere but in short:

Drain the coolant, disconnect all the wiring from the ECU in the boot and feed the wiring through the bulkhead into the engine bay.

Disconnect the coolant hoses from the heater and radiator feeds in the engine bay.

Disconnect the fuel lines

(carefully

-have a jar readyto catch fuel and a rag)

Drain the gearbox oil and pull the driveshafts

(you can do this without removing all the suspension if you disconnect from the cross member and slacken the strut top mounts a little, just leave the struts hanging)

Remove the exhaust

Remove the cross member

Support the engine with a hoist and remove the mounts

Lower the engine to the ground

Lift the car up high enough that you can slide the engine out.
