Please Help! Code 52, idle problem, knocking when start the car..

Post by yiu_chris »

Hi guys
I've got my rev2 turbo for about 1/2 year
I've have the idle problem for a long time, it used to be idle at 800rpm at cold/just start, then idle at 1500rpm when warm/fully warm up. also missfire when idle
I've check for vacuum leak and can't find anything.
also the oil light is always on for the first 2 to 8 seconds when I start the car (cold or hot) and sometime I can hear knocking from engine. Engine light was on sometime, (sometime will turn the car to safe mode sometime will not)

Last week, the car was send to rouge to check it, and changed cambelt, oil, oil filter, Spark Plugs, and fixed oil leak. About the idle, they can't find vacuum leak as well. I've brought a idle valve to them to fit which I bought it used in ebay. Nothing change after that idle valve changed, and they can not find what's wrong with the car. so what they've done is adjust the TPS, air con idle thing, the idle screw on top of the throttle body (all the way to minimum) to try to bring the idle down.

They've also check the fault code and found that the car have fault code of 52, which is the knock sensor, and they said it is caused by oil pressure issue of the engine as I told them about the oil light and knocking when start the car. (which I don't really think so, I think it's the timing problem)

After all that, the idle stay at 1100 rpm. Then I took my car back to Bristol. However, engine light was on when I arrived Bristol after all motorway but the car did not jump to safe mode.

The day after, the engine light was on again but car was jump to safe mode. I've check the ecu fault code and I've found code 52 and 22, which is water temp sensor. Next day,I've then go to Toyota to get a new water temp sensor, but that doesn't help with the idle but the car feel better.

ECU reset after fitted the water temp sensor. But now the engine light is on again (it is on after a few mins of driving after cold start) and the car jump to safe mode and the code is 52 again (but code 22 is gone).

After the adjustment made by Rouge, the car is idle at 500 to 600 when cold start and sometime just stall after start, and I have to give it a throttle when start, and it idle at 1100rpm when hot.
No knocking when start, but oil light sometime stay on for 1 to 2 seconds.

Do you think the ECU of the car need replacing or I need another Idle valve or Knock sensor? it it really the knock sensor itself or other problem?
How can I kill the Idle problem?

The Knocking noice when start was not happening since last cambelt and oil change.
However, it happened again today. knocking noise at start when the car is hot.............what happened? is it the oil pressure issue? how can I fix it??
and the idle is go up to 1400rpm (when hot) again today...same as before...help..
is it only the knock sensor cause problem??

Sorry about the long post and poor English but I hope people can understand it.

The knock sensor code will make the car run in safe mode. You'll definitely want to correct that issue.

What I'd do is take out the old sensor. A blown one can sound like a broken lightbulb (something rattling inside), so if it does then you'll know its gone. Also, the knock sensor wiring is a bit rubbish so it wouldn't be too surprising if it had snapped somewhere.

Either the sensor or the cabling will probably be at fault. Whether this has anything to do with the idle problem is another thing, but the code will definitely make the car run like badly.
