MOT Failed Emissions, AGAIN!

Post by jm_mr2 »

Hi,

I've posted this up on the mr2oc forum's but thought it might be worth seeing if anyone on here has any bright ideas.....

I put my car through MOT last week, passed everything except emissions. Strange thing is it failed emissions last year, bought new CAT and Lambda sensor and sailed through after. The tester says because the readings are so high he thinks’ it could be a problem with an air hose?

Results (at 830rpm)

CO Level: 4.64% vol
HC Level: 299ppm
CO2 Level: 11.32% vol
O2 Level: 0.50% Vol
LAMBDA: 0.88

The sensor I bought last year was one from Rogue, the CAT was a genuine Toyota one from an mr2oc member so I can't see why it could be either of those?

The car is an N/A.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

James

I know I replaced my rev3 lambda with a generic unit and it failed pretty quick. Well, the ECU didn't like it so it might as well have been dead. I replaced it with an OEM lambda and no problems since.

Do you have any error codes stored?
What revision / reg plate is your car?
Have you checked all the air hoses?

Hi Allan,

Hmmm don't really want to fork out for another Lambda unless I'm absolutely sure it's what needs replacing (especially an OEM one), also haven't heard of anyone else having problems with ones from Rogue?

Will be checking error codes with a friend tomorrow who's a lot more mechanically minded than me!

The car is a Rev2 K Reg.

Had a quick look at the air hoses but pretty hard to tell if anything's leaking, someone on the mr2oc suggested covering them in talc powder and revving the engine to spot the leak which will have a go at tomorrow.

At work we will not fit anything but an oe lamda sensor on the toyota/lexus range having had nothing but problems with non genuine ones including some bosch.I would get it professionally checked out on the lamda circuit

is it a rev1/2?

there is a 'cheat' pipe you can pull which will show the results to 0% and pass the test. then you can spend the time trying to figure it out.

Yeah it's a Rev2. The cheat trick might be a last resort!

Just done an error code check and it's coming up as 24 which is an Air Intake Temperature Sensor fault so got to find one pretty sharpish before MOT runs out on Thursday!

Hi,

Great idea! I guess they are the same, they look very similar. Just swapped them over and reset ECU and it's still saying 24 which I don't get as I know the Fan sensor works! Looks like it's not a problem with the sensor.

If it's giving out a 24 error is there anything else that could be wrong apart from the sensor? Checked the connection and it's definately getting power.
