adventure games from the 90's

Post by H3RB »

why the heck dont they make em like they did anymore??!!
im talking about stuff like, monkey island, broken sword, full throttle, the dig, the feeble files and little big adventure
anybody play these? how truely amazing were they compared to all of the so called adventure games.
today every adventure game includes a gun yes uncharted drakes fortune was brilliant but still not a patch on the old point and click style adventure games from the 90's.

anybody know where i can "aquire" any of the above titles? even if u have them sitting in a drawer somewhere lol
so did any of you play these games? love them as much as i did/do? or did u think they were boring? lol

I used to love them, even the really old ones that didn't have images, just basic text.

Simon the Sorcerer was fun too.

No idea where to grab them without having a Google but for a bit of fun:

Ok you've given me the excuse to list all the classics I used to play back then:

Shadow of the Beast
Shadow of the Beast 2
Killing Game Show
Speedball
Xenon 2 (great soundtrack!)
IK+ (how could you forget ths one?)
Budokan
It Came From the Desert!
Outrun
Double Dragon
Zany Golf
........

They were way more addictive back then, but maybe its an age thing - nowadays everything looks amazing but seems soul less, however, I would rank WoW (World of Warcraft the most addictive game I have ever played).

Herb,

A few years back I downloaded the Scumm VM emulator which allows you to play old Lucas Arts titles on your PC and what’s better they even provide you withy the games to download.

I used it a few years back and downloaded Monkey Island 1 & 2, Sam and Max (couldn’t get anywhere with that one) and one of the Indiana Jones games. I almost wet myself when I heard that plinky plonk music start up when I booted Monkey Island up. I loved that game!

Did you ever play lure of the temptress?

Really want to download Indiana Jones and The Fate of Atlantis as I never managed to complete it, I got to Atlantis, and then my stupid Amiga 500 died good and proper never to be replaced!

There was also a website called Home of the Underdogs where a lot of 80’s and 90’s games were re-released as freeware and would work on the PC.

Might actually have a hunt for some of this stuff when I get home!

If you find anything PLEASE let me know – really wanted to try full throttle myself!

ScummVM is awesome.

I just finished Full Throttle again for the umpteenth time last month.

I hardly play computer games at all anymore - partly lack of a PC (my Mac is also one of my work machines, so I don't want to install Windows on it) and partly lack of time & interest. (Well, not so much interest, but mostly becuase I know that I will become addicted, and I don't need that right now!)

But when I do fancy a game, I fire up one of the old LucasArts adventures. They were all pure class, and I've lost count of the number of times I've played a couple of them. Yes, the story is always the same... but they're great stories with great humour. Don't know why, but I never worry about going back to them - where as some more recent games I've played I don't want to play again after completing them once... (PC game Mafia was an exception to this - the story on that was epic too)

In recent times, thanks to ScummVM, I've played Full Throttle, The Dig, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max (see my Avatar... ) and Monkey Island 1. Really want to find the other Monkey Islands, Indiana Jones, and a couple of others. Even though I played most of them when they were still modern... (That makes me feel old! )
Having most of the bigger ones on original disc already helps... (No idea why I never chucked them, but am so glad of that now - of course, the ones on floppy are useless)

So yes, love those games, and still play them. I was wondering whether anyone else thought the same as me - very glad to see that's the case!

I'll have a look around some time for my PC disc of Full Throttle (only have the Mac CD handy). If I find it, I'll put a shout up here... :)

Oh and the soundtrack to Full Throttle made me find the Gone Jackals (the group that did the music). Now all it takes is for me to listen to their CD again and I'm back in the game. :thumleft: Pure awesomeness!

I did used to like the old cartidges. The NES games used to come in a box with those little dust covers to go with the games.
And I remember Link or Zelda being a gold one which was probably more cool than the actual game lol.

Think we are going to need to start listing where we have managed to download the games from, so others (well Me) can download them and relive my yoof!

I can remember getting Monkey Island 2 for my Amiga 500 – If I remember correctly it came on 32 floppies! Insert disc 1 … pause … Insert disc 23 … pause … Insert disc 7 … pause … Insert disc 10 and all of that just because I accidentally clicked the screen and the guy walked back off screen to where I had just been … argh! :D

God all the memories are flooding back to me now … danger nostalgia overload!

My gaming skills must have been so much higher when I was younger, as some of the games I used to play and beat I have come back to with my Amiga Emulator and I just get nailed badly! I do think games were a lot harder back then – to the point of being insanely hard.

I remember playing shadow of the beast – the first one and literally never getting past the first screen, some ball thing would fly at me, I couldn’t out run it, jump it or kick it and would die every time. Then get presented with some baldy scanned in image which you’re forced to look at for 5 mins before you can play again! Shadow of the beast 2 wasn’t much easier! I remember getting the cheat for infinite life and it was still stupidly hard.

Anyone remember James Pond, Rodland, Rick Dangerous, Shuffle puck café, Ugh, Operation Stealth?

James Pond - Legendary!

Monkey Island i found a while ago and started playing again I think the last time i played it i think i was less than 10years old playing again now i realise how subtley the adult humour was slipped in and i found i could beat the sword master much easier.

It came from the Desert i could never get right

Cannon Fodder anyone?

Alchemist on the Spectrum had a gold case and cassette and that was better than that game too, lol
