[Mk2] [Turbo] Slightly odd coolant conundrum

Post by 01smiffy »

May have a very simple explanation this one, but I thought I would put it to the experts!

My 93 turbo began losing coolant a week or so ago, I had the car up on ramps today in the hope of diagnosing the location.

I found that I have a small puddle appearing underneath the front of the car, so i am guessing the rad has a small hole or something.

Where is the best place to get rads by the way?

Also, strangley, the overflow bottle was very eagerly pushing coolant out of the overflow hose when at first, then stopped when the level got low I am presuming, could this be because air is being introduced into the system from the leak in the rad?

Any leak from the radiator should really be visible if you had the front on ramps. Best to be certain before you invest. If it is from the very front of the car it will be either the rad or a perished hose connector. Any further back it could be the 'heater hose from hell'.

Any reputable Motor Factor will be able to supply a radiator. They are also available online and on ebay. Beware of units which are very cheap.

The expansion system will fail to work if the coolant in the expansion tank is below the level of the 'dip hose'. If it is below that then air gets sucked into the system. This usually results in air-locks in the heater curcuit meaning the heaters only blow cold.
