[Mk2] [Turbo] I want to stop smoking... XS Power turbo problems?

Post by -:[KM]:- »

Right guys and gals...

I'm getting smoke (blue) when pulling up. None when boosting, none when cruising, only when the boost needle goes in to the strongest vacuum whilst slowing does it happen. It was whisps of blue, now it's a small cloud... totally embarrassing!

So, I stripped the top end of the engine and cleaned everything from the filter to the inlet manifold. I made sure it was spotlessly clean. A week and a half later with about 500 miles driven I take it apart to find this...

Now then.. is this enough to create smoke?
Or, if the cool side is this bad, will the hot side be worse?
:-k

As a foot note.. there are NO breathers attached to the inlet piping, the filter is clean and the plugs are a good colour. Oh, and yes, it's a cheap a$$ XS T3... POS.

Yes matey.. It's when a 'foot off' situation happens. Slowing for traffic, roundabouts, etc. Basically, decelleration is when it's at it's worse. Just been for a few pints and it was smoking on parking the car, a couple of blips on the pedal and it clears..

Cheers for the help geezer.. I know you're not biting me!! We've had a few words in the past. So what hey? That's what lads do!! That's how I met most of my closest mates!! :eye: :thumleft:

Damn... I bloody hope not. I can't be ar$ed to take the head off again... ](*,)

If it was valve guides, or even stem seals, would it not smoke on start-up too? When settled oil has seeped down from the camshaft chamber...? :-k I'd maybe expect the plugs to be a bit black too.. but they're spot on.

I've too many thoughts in my head. Last time I bought a turbo it was the piston ringlands gone.. cost a pretty penny in the long run.. #-o

KM... you've hit the nail on the head there...... Mine was doing exactly the same a few years back.... fine on boost ( if regular ) etc... as soon as you pull up... smoking....

I found the compressor to be passing... is yours a rev 2 ?? If rev 3... start the car and run it without the intake on... rev it and you'll see the line of oil appear...

I had a chargecooler on mine which just started to fill up if I took it easy... and boot it.. it would actually misfire from oil injection !!

Classic case of oil seal failure. When you're idling the oil pressure is sufficiently low for the seals to "pump down" and allow oil past.

same turbo same problems ....
mine got worse and worse till it was puffing out lots of blue smoke on idle too. I done a quick compression test, that came out fine, so on went a nice gt3571
my old xs power lasted about 3-4000 miles at reletively low boost before it died!

Blimey... that's crap! Mines got 22,000ish miles on it now.. I suppose I was lucky. That was at 20psi too! Mind you, the metal work (manifold & DP) has been a constant battle...

How are you finding the gt3571?

i know, after my rebuild I was hoping not to spend too much on the car for a while!
The gt35 is so much better in every aspect (except cost) :)
it spools better, make more power/torque across the rev range. making 400 fwhp @ 1.5 bar boost, standard cams and map sensor being the limiting aspect. Made reasonable power with the xs jobbie. 340@ 1.3ish bar

i have one of those XS ones too, it came off my mates GT4 which had made around 450hp with that turbo on it he then changed to a GT35, he said the GT35 spooled nicer.

As everyone else has pointed out mate ... you got it in one, on the overrun its the oil seals on the turbo that usually weep :(

22K miles from a turbo that cheap ain't bad!
