[Mk2] [NA] Brake problem? :(

Post by princess_slc22 »

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone can help :)
Last night i heard a clicking/dripping noise coming from behind my front drivers side wheel when i parked up. Went to check and i could smell burning coming from it and it was really hot. Checked the others and they were fine.
Today i went down the road in it and it was much worse, there was smoke coming from it.
Do i need a new brake pad? Or is it worse than that? :(
Cheers :)

Sounds like a sticking caliper. Depending on how hands on your are you can either try to take yours apart, clean them up and re grease the sliders or you can get a second hand caliper or a refurbed one and fit that. its not that hard a job but its likely all the nuts will be seized up. I guess a garage would charge £150-200 for it. You could also look at your discs and pads and possibly change those too. i would suggest you don't drive it with the caliper stuck on.

Definately sounds like a sticky brake caliper :)

If you've managed to get smoke to come out of it too, I would thoroughly recommend changing your front brake pads along with fixing / replacing the front caliper as you'll have uneven wear on your O/S and N/S.

If you get the caliper yourself (http://www.brakesint.co.uk/) Part number BCA2079 (assuming you've got standard brakes) then a decent garage should only charge for an hour labour to swap the caliper and rebleed your brake fluid.

Or if you're feeling handy with a spanner you can do it all yourself :D I've replaced mine before so if you need any pointers then drop me a line!

Thanks guys, just had the other front caliper replaced last august coz it failed the mot lol :( guess it was only a matter of time before this one went too.
If i could afford it id just replace them all & pads too, not cheap these calipers!
I got my last one from brakes international, £157.40 then you get £50 back if you take your old caliper back to them.
Pads wise, any advice? Which ones to go for and where from?

Cheers :thumleft:

Standard Toyota will be fine, you can get them from a number of places like camskill, fensport etc.

Last time I had a Caliper from Brakes-Int, rather annoyingly they do not come with new sliding pins / bracket - and 9-times-out-of-10 it's the sliding pins at fault, the caliper & pistons being fine.
