[Mk2] [Turbo] Advice needed Boost controller vs Uprated actuator

Post by NORRISMR2 »

Hi

Im thinking of taking advantage of my forged pistons and upgraded engine parts by increasing boost...

The two methods i believe of doing this are by uprated actuator probably 1.0 bar or boost controller

which is best opinions needed and advice on best of each of these...

bbost controller for sure,
this way you can turn the boost down for winter driving, town etc etc, and up the boost for fast road use :thumleft:

Munnsy has it pretty much spot on. Whatever actuator you decide on will only be able to deliver the boost the spring is set to. A boost controller (when turned off of course) will deliver that boost level but will also allow a higher level of boost.

so if you have an uprated spring/actuactor and decide on a later date you want a boost controller, can you keep the uprated item, or will you need to revert back to stock spring/actuator?

also with intercooler, exhaust, downpipe, bov and intake, seems my boost guage reads 0.95-0.98bar on full boost without use of a boost controller (stock ecu). is this likely to be uprated spring/actuator, vsv disabled, or just a boost spike? (assuming boost guage is accurate)

That'd be about right for a rev4 should be around 0.8 bar stock but is probably showing a little bit extra with those mods you've got on there as well as the cold air temps in this weather.

if the vsv was disabled you'd see alot less than stock boost without a boost controller fitted to bring the boost level back up.

as for the uprated actuator spring i dont think i matters cos the boost controller bleeds off the boost to regulate the boost level you've set sort of bypassing / blinding the actuator.
