[Mk2] [Turbo] ST205 GT4 Question (bear with me, it's 3S-GTE chargecooler related)

Post by toxo »

The celica has a weird intake on the bonnet which feeds into a duct next to the charge cooler. I am struggling to work out what this is for. Is it just to duct cold air down onto the cam cover, between the cover and the cooler core?

Perhaps these images will help explain what I'm talking about.

from the pics it looks like its meant to just funnel cold air between the cam cover and CC core.

good idea! :D

Yeah, that's what I figured. Wasn't totally sold on the idea because it's difficult to see where the outlet for that duct would lead to - I guess this might be one of the reasons the cam cover on the rev3 was redesigned, for airflow from this duct as well as adding the mount for this + the cc core. I think I might fab up a cold air feed of some kind from where the intercooler used to be.

From what i have read somewhere it channels air into the cambelt
area as on the rally cars something used to melt a bit in there.
I think it is just asthetic on the road cars, maybe wrong tho.

i was just think about that as well lol.

thinking you could convert the top vent from the side intakes and somehow direct the air.

not sure if it would work on a Rev 2 tho.

also think about water, dust etc thats gonna be directed over the ignition leads. :-k

They don't actually :)

It was homologated for the safari cars as they had problems with the cambelt overheating and melting.

On the road cars they duct is defunct as the passage into the cambelt area is blanked off.

The duct is not defunct on all vehicles as on some the cam over was not blanked off and it did allow the air through. IMO the nasty bit is that the duct is not screened to prevent dirt and stones etc getting through too.

Odd. It wasn't on my car and all of the discussions about it on the gt4.oc ended the same, it was always blocked off.

Not saying you're wrong btw, just never came across it :)

I took one off a UK spec ST205 engine and the cam cover had the opening in it. It does appear that it's more common to be blanked off though.
