My antonym to Harry's Turbo

Post by Peter C »

Despite having sold my last MR2 over a year ago, out of habit I kept a regular eye on IMOC. My contributions were rarely worthwhile and I managed to annoy a few people, not least MattMR2. Being an old (34) git, I reserve my right to be a "smug dickhead" some of the time - some things will never change. :thumleft:

Anyway, whilst my daily ride (brand new Renault Megane) is doing it's job well, I felt the need for another MR2 in my life. I spoilt my previous MR2 with big wheels and lowered springs (the thing was stiffer than Lexington Steele) so I was looking for a standard car. I fancied something different with a hint of classic about it. Rev2 onwards MR2s still look a bit too modern for my liking, so it had to be a Rev1. I had my old NA GT for over 5 years and I thought it was a better car than my subsequent Rev3 NA. So I ended up buying this:

It's a 1990 Rev1 Coupe, which is completely standard, Sony CD/Tuner aside. It has 102k on the clock, with a chunk of service history and mechanically it's in rude health. The (blue) interior is almost mint. Bodywork is ok, the paint is shiny but the front and rear bumpers are a slighly different shade of blue. I got it with 10 months MoT and 3.5 months tax, for a very reasonable price.

Now I know it's the least loved version of the SW20, but that's the appeal for me. Aside from fitting my old gear knob, I propose to keep it standard and the ultimate lack of pace doesn't bother me. It's not that slow, with a sub 10 secs 0-60 and it will probably do 120MPH+, not that I intend to find out. Unlike Harry's Turbo (or most other MR2s), it's not lairy, loud, flash, fast or fancy. It's perfect for an old man like me.

Here's a few more pics:

I'd rather keep it standard, thanks Matt.

We are all enthusiasts in our own right, albeit standard or modified. :thumleft:
I have often toyed with the idea of getting another Mk2 or even a Mk1 and ensuring it is bog standard as a daily drive. I would have one extreme to the other then where i am currently hard pressed to find anything on my Turbo that has NOT been modified!

She looks a classic! A bit of TLC is all she needs! :thumleft:

Good to see you back Peter, and with tidy wheels too. Just out of interest why didn't you go for a gt or a t-bar?
I've been modding a little more since you left... cars in at the mo actually for all new suspension and repairs to arches and sills and a few other dents and scuffs.
Fairly recent pics in my garage.

Rob,

Good to hear you're doing ok.

I have a penchant for classic / retro cars and I fancied another MR2. Mk1s don't do it for me so it had to be a Rev 1 Mk2.

I've been searching on the internet for a suitable car for a while now, but never bothered to take matters further. Last Friday, my wife and I were travelling into London to see some friends and I saw the Coupe parked up and covered with for sale stickers. I took a look at it, the owner came out to greet me and it went on from there. In the end I got it for £550.

I'm not into speed or big flashy bodykits. I like the clean lines of the spoiler-less look and I've always been a fan of your car. The fact that a blue Coupe with a blue interior is at the bottom of the MR2 food chain gives the car appeal. I guess it's some kind of reverse psychology and I believe that when it comes to MR2s, less can be more.

The Coupe is far from mint. I would say it's condition 2 but it's all complete and original. The only thing that's been replaced is the stereo and it's been professionally wired up - I had to check! I love the blue interior - totally retro. From 10 feet away the bodywork looks great but a closer inspection reveals a few flaws. That doesn't bother me, an 18 year old car must have some patina! I don't intend to drive it hard but from what I've experienced so far, it seems most of the 119 BHP is still there. The engine pulls cleanly from low revs and has great torque. There is no need to take it past 3,000 rev/min. Fuel consumption should be good too.

I'll keep you posted!

You have no idea how much I regret selling old number 304 (G905APB)! The guy who bought it off me (via EBay) turned out to be a dealer and he sold it within a few weeks to a lad from the Midlands. This chap contacted me saying he's bought my old car and we've exchanged emails. He was very happy with it and as far as I know, he still has it.

The new car should be on an H plate, so it's nowhere near as old as 304.

I love standard looking MR2's more than kitted ones :thumleft:

looks a clean one. I had a 3SFE, butchered it with bodykits 18"s and a turbo engine.

I'm on my 3rd MR2 turbo now and I'm just keeping the body standard and gettin it in good condition :D
