Smashed my mk1b t-bar,

Post by Braddyboy »

Hi, some of you know me and my mk1b but most don't. Anyway it is no more as i lost it on a bend this morning and took out a dry stone wall, hitting it with 3 corners before flicking me back into the middle of the road.

Good news-
I didn't have any passengers(yes i know there is only 1 passenger seat but i've heard of more than that being carried)
I didn't hit any other traffic or pedestrians.
I'm mostly injury free with the exception of a bump on my head and some whip lash.
The engine still starts.

Bad news-
That's the end of the road for this little baby.
I'd just put on a custom exhaust, 2new tyres, new brake calliper and was about to have a couple of nice seats from Tommy (coverco).

Advice please -
Me and my good mate Russ (russthedude) think it may be worth getting it carried back to my house and sell off the bits before weighing it in for scrap. It's got a lot of good bits inside and out that were working well and still do.

Photos will follow when I get over this whiplash.

Cheers Brad

Looks like a sweeping bend, back end goes, impact at 90deg to the road, then a half spin and the back end goes in afterwards. Just my guess, marks on the kerb will tell the tale.
You don't have to be going it too much for that to happen. Once a car starts to slide you realise how much bloody energy they carry, even at moderate speeds!

Glad you are okay and the 20 year old crumple zones still did their job. Take it easy - it took my whiplash a week to develop into full blown "I can't lift my head off the pillow" neck injury.

Swift recovery, and break her for bits to keep others on the road!

You may indeed ask how it happened. Here's the facts, I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions for legal reasons.

0540 in the morning
wet greasy road but not much rain
on my way to the train station
notoriously bad road ( i know this because I'm a firefighter in this area and we get plenty of work from it - must have forgotten this important point at the time) :clown:
National speed limit road
Back end went out on a left hand corner
Back end came back in again and kept going #-o
Car span clockwise :?
Span some more :!:
"reversed" into a lamp post and dry stone wall on the other side of the road ](*,)
forwarded into the same wall a "bit" further up the hill with o/s then n/s (this is the hole Russ posted a picture of, in total about 19 feet long by 7ft high), ](*,) ](*,)

Me surveying the damage
Image

came to a stop in the middle lane of 3 another "bit" up the road :pale: (see photo after the police kindly dragged it to the kerb)

Image

I got out and called for an ambulance for me and police to shift the car
0% alcohol on the breathalyser :oldtongue:
ambulance and hospital diagnosed whiplash which is really aching now, and a bump right down the top of my head which I think was the T-bar release lever :eye:
I'm alive though \:D/  :D :o

Car's getting brought back to my house tomorrow where I'll set about taking it apart. All offers please, I know Russ got his shot gun out but money talks and shotgun's walk when you need a new car. (only joking mate) What remains after a month or so will be collected by the scrap man and his hi-ab from my garden and weighed in at £140/tonne.

Coverco/tommy - I'll give you a call later about the seats etc. Thanks for commenting on my exhaust note, it was made by http://www.longlife.co.uk in Leeds back in may and i went for "mid-sport" noise level, not too much but you know it's there, with twin pea shooter tail pipes as stock.

Here's how she looked on Tuesday
Image

Before the crash it ran like a dream (still does I suppose) no engine or gearbox problems despite the 198000 on the clock.

Cheers

Brad

russthedude wrote:I'll let Brad give oyu the full details, but it was a nice left hand bend, back end started to drift off, then the back wheels got some grip again and sent him straight for the wall. It's normally a fun part of road to drive, but when it's wet, stuff like this happens... speed limit on that road is 60, so it wasn't exactly a slow bump.

That's right Russ. Speed limit. In fact when questioned by the police, that is exactly what speed I told them "national speed limit your honour"

This map is centred on the corner in question. I was heading left to right and the car came to rest around the 3rd "Leeds road A660" from the left (when opened in full screen).

From looking at the scene again, and having my mate Jim assess the wall for repairs (about 26feet needs redoing he reckons), I'm thiking I did at least 720deg in total!!!

I hit the wall (and lamp post) with my rear n/s (180deg ish)
Bounced off and hit it with front o/s then n/s which left the big hole (another 270deg)
Bounced off again and ended up in the middle of the road facing the way I was originally (a final 270deg). And that's if I only span 180 before the first impact. It was quite a violent spin and i wasn't exactly counting.

Lucky boy all in all.

Glad to hear your okay , shame about the car :(

My mate managed to demolish a drystone wall once, the council was going to charge him to fix the wall but he offered to fix it himself.
So he repaired the wall, the council inspected and approved the repair and payed him the £700 they were going to charge him for having it fixed.

Go figure that one.

You say you've a custom exhaust? Is it damaged in any way?

I am facing possible redundancy next wednesday, but would be interested....

It might be a little tender as am I. I'd expect about £150 if it was mint, but it ain't. Not sure how far from mint it is though.

Call me and we'll discuss if you like and I'll get it off and send you pictures. Mind you postage will be a nightmare.

Tommy was telling me about some classic car thing next month. I may be going and can load up the pick up with bits for interested parties.

Watch this space mate. You might get a bargain off me if you're willing to have an exhaust that's been abused.

As with all the parts off this car, any inspection is welcome prior to purchase and I'll even accept returns as long as the seller pays the postage both ways.
