It doesn't matter if the exhaust meets any noise limits or not... you can wave an MOT chit in the air if you like but if your neighbours submit a complaint to the authorities they can still take action. This has been done in the past and has stood up in court.

I love my loud exhaust to! - But I play it down when driving in quiet areas... like my own street!

I have a very loud exhaust and have pi$$ed my niegbours off a bit in the past. They havent moaned at me yet but I have heard that theyre not that happy. I can understand your nieghbours getting pi$$ed off with you especially if you are driving pretty quick or at high revs late at night.
I often go out for a drive in the early hours and to save annoyance I put the car in 3rd and crawl out of my road, its suprising how quiet you can make a loud exhaust.
Dont agree with them threatening to get the police involved, they should have spoken to you in person about it and given you a chance to explain.
