Letter from Annoyed Resident - Have a read its histerical

Post by Big Maka »

Background: I have a black MkII tubby with a RSR-10-T201 big bore exhaust system installed

On the 12th of september I received a letter through my door which read the following:

The Toyota Sports Car Owner
My adress

Dear Sir,

I'm sure I'm speaking for a majority of the local residents when I write this letter to you.
I feel I must bring to your attention the aggravation and annoyance that your "Sports Car" is causing us.
Over the past couple of weeks your car seems to have got a lot louder?? As you drive down the local roads our windows vibrate with the pitch of the noise of your car. I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be acceptable on an MOT test.
I would therefore be grateful if you could arrange to have you car looked at professionally and have the necessary works carried out to reduce the noise output to an acceptable (NORMAL) level worthy of an MOT.
I understand that you are young, and a loud, fast car is the "in thing", but please spare a thought for the people that live around you.
At this stage I would like to keep this on a one to one level and "nip it in the bud". However if the noise persists I will have no further option than to contact the local Council and the west midland police force to inform them of the aggravation that you are causing us.
I very much hope it doesn't come to that, and thank you in anticipation of your cooperation in this matter.

many thanks

There was no signature on this letter or address or phone number!
Has anyone else got a loud exhaust and experienced anything like this? It just made me laugh and even my parents think they are just being petty aas I take it easy on the local roads!!

Please let me know what you think about this!!

I have a nur spec exhaust on my car which actually failed it mot! I then sourced a baffle for it which actually made it pass the test. The down side was that with the baffle sounded xxxx and v raspy so I took it off again.

I then decided I wanted more bhp so I decided to fit a de cat! big mistake! The car could be heard going all the way thought my village and further. 2 miles approx! After a couple of weeks of having the de cat on I was starting to get alot of bad looks from people who stayed around where I live so I deicded to take the de cat off. Im pritty sure if I had left the de cat in place I would have got in xxxx sooner or later.

How loud is your car? would it pass the 97 db law? Have you had an mot done with the current exhaust on? Does it have a de cat in place?

At a guess is it louder then this?

I did have a neighbour moan about the mongoose exhaust on my rev 1 after the car was decatted and sometimes the exhaust does set car alarms off specially when reversing but she got over that and am friendly with her sons
Now i have a departure pro 2 which is even louder but what i do is keep the rev limit to 2k max when coming into the street even if in 3rd so not to annoy them as the area i live is is qiuite rough and they would put paint thinner or worse over the car and since they didn't leave a name number etc then that is what could happen rather than come to you direct.
Thats just my opinion m8

I can sympathise with your neighbours; i'm a pretty light sleeper, so any noise wakes me up, including the EXTRA noisy bin men. #-o
I have a Departure 2 exhaust which is amazingly quiet considering the size of it. I'd advise an exchange to a quieter exhaust, not worth winding your neighbours up, the last thing you want is your car getting vandalised....
Hope you get it sorted

I have to side with ur neighbours. They have to live with it bud. Imagine if there was some tat music played outside ur window that you hated. You'd throw a brick at them! It's unwanted noise so try and respect their needs! But by all means! Get a farm and a plot of land and make as much noise as you want - that way you're not disturbing anyone!

Try and be considerate to others really, that's what I think.

Just modify your driving to keep the noise down, its about respect to the neighbours.
Otherwise sod-em!
My powerflow peaked at about 105db when bounced and is pretty loud, so all I do is take it easy through the village and I have never had a complaint.
I am going to live forever, or die trying!

if its below legal limits they cant do anything, ive just had a run in with my neighbour too. its best to keep them sweet, just try and keep the revs low when driving close to your home. might be worth knocking on doors too to find out who sent the letter. just be extra polite and try and get it sorted.

There's a couple of 17 year old scrotes round my way who blast around on those scooter type things with seriously loud and raspy exhausts that sound like a wasp on angel dust.

They seriously pi$$ me off and I would dearly love to remove these idiots from the face of this planet!

I can therefore sympathise with your neighbour.

My own Tubby is seriously loud at 88dB but I always try to keep off boost and below 3K until I'm out of the residential area.

I think they have gone about it in a polite way to be honest, alot of people would just key it or cause some damage. So your pretty lucky in that respect, I know its a bad thing to do but you may have to get a quieter exhaust.

If they kick off to the council, and I know this sounds stupid, but you could have an ASBO placed on you and be demanded to remove the exhaust for a quieter or standard one.

This person could be ready to take some serious action if it has annoyed them enough to write you a letter.

My neighbours hate me but hate my dad more because he had a new scooby sti with a full stainless straight through except for one sports cat exhaust sytem. he sold that and they thought he'd got over it and then he bought a kit car with a fireblade engine in it and the exhaust is about 3 foot long and straight through. takes the pressure away from me!!

i think that if they cant beat you they should join you and get noisy exhausts

Im quite surprised that some people on here are actually telling this lad to remove his exhaust and get a quieter one.

To be fair, if it is all above board and legal, then there is no reason why he should get another exhaust. Yes maybe get a bung / baffle for it and keep the revs low in the street / residential areas, but at the end of the day, it his pride and joy, he appears to be young, at least he isnt screaming down the street in a Corsa with 2 dustbins for exhausts.

If i was you, i would get your system checked out, could even be a leak or hole somewhere in your system that is causing the noise, get the MOT (or if you have one already thats cool) and keep the revs low when in the residential areas.

But as soon as you hit the highways, A + B roads and trackdays let that baby rip and enjoy it!

The annoying thing is they don't have the b@lls to knock on the door and chat to you about it - that's what is irritating.

I do have sympathy with them though as if you're not into cars it can be damn irritating to have resonating sounds all times of the day and night.

It's a question of whether you are legal/not legal first, then secondly how you feel towards your neighbours. Check the first before deciding on the second.

ok so they didn't knock on the door but maybe the neighbour thinks you are a nutter and is scared you'll 'do them' At the end of the day there are plenty of legal ways to MAKE you tone down the exhaust but they have chosen to ask you nicely. Try and see what you can do to keep the noise down.

I was considering writing a letter to my neighbours saying sorry and telling them that i will be changing my exhaust soon. i do shift work at silly hours and wake my housemate every time, probably most of brentwood too.

Its poor that they have not knocked on your door to chat about it, just to let you know your annoying them.

Do you make an effort to keep it revs down when you come home? As long as you don't come back and then let the car idle then i'd say they are just being anal, if you do then fair enough they have every right to complain (any comments about letting turbo cool are invalid you just drive off boost for the last mile).

I must admit I had an Apexi Hayabusa & downpipe on my car and it registered 102db and I felt a barry t&at driving the car so I got Hayward & scott to build me an exhaust that was just as free flowing and only registered 92db much more civilised.

Just remember 95% of people (i.e. not those that are school age) when they hear a loud droning exhaust on a 4 pot turn and look expecting a retard in a nova/saxo/astra etc they are not looking round thinking cool.

To be fair to them, they've gone about it in a very fair & sensible manor.
I don't know "how" you drive the car around your area, but i always keep revs to a minimum when near home & on the down hill to my house, normally coast in neutral, just not to upset neighbours or cause unwanted attention.

I have recently changed from my 5zigen zorst back to my Fujitsubo as the 5zigen is basically an ASBO on a car! Neighbour commented on it in a jokey way, but it was just mega attention grabbing, so it's come off.

I'd try getting a bung for weekday/commuting as someone else said, or keep revs low.

As for the legal comment, AFAIK there's no set dB level, it's up to the MOT tester's discretion (just had MOT so was asking) the general rule of thumb is that it can be as loud as any another car around it. Very vague, but just common sense normally.

Last MOT i went for with 5zigen fitted, the MOT tester just told me to go home as he wasn't going to take my money off me to fail me on the noise! lol

Christ, think that's my longest ever post!
