Ah.....I thought OP meant cardboard behind the filler :oops:

So all MK1s have cardboard behind the wheel arches from new? I've been warned about some type of foam lining on some of the panels and it causing rot from the inside but havn't found this on mine yet.

When I was working for GM, we had a VX220 come in for a body shell swap and the owner had filled up every space in the shell with rolled up newspaper and cardboard - presumedly to deaden any road noise. 'Could have been nasty if it ever caught fire :shock:

It's not cardboard. It's a sponge that is there in the inner rear arches. If you take it out you get more induction noise in the cabin if you have a cone type air filter in the boot recess.
