see i was only going from pictures, i didn't know if flowing through the heat exchanger fins would restrict the air compaired to traveling through the normal bar and fin arrangement like in normal air/air intercoolers. Just an idea i thought i would throw in here to see if anyone had thought of it before......

If you mean the regular HKS side-mount IC, then no. And I can't see any current CC kit for the MR2 being up to scratch either. But soon, you'll have a nice option that will! ;)

I'd also like to know, not so fussed about how soon, but def about how much, £1K is too much to pay for a rogue one especially when c/c for other cars are usually half that amount  hell if you have a cossie you can get a Pace auxiliary charge cooler kit and an uprated intercooler as well,..

chargecooler+intercooler+fitting kit(pump, radiator, hose) = £250 less than a charge cooler and kit for the MR2.

p.s. is there a reason no one uses the auxiliary charge cooler on the mr2?

Costs are not confirmed yet, but don't expect them to be much cheaper than the Pace one.

Think about it. Quality bits cost money! Even the Spearco Air-Air IC costs £600 odd when imported on a weak dollar, and that's WITHOUT the import tax and VAT added (which brings it to about £730!). And even then, the pipes and clips are of poor quality. With *my* Spearco, I had to spend about another £250 on decent pipes, hoses and clips until I was happpy! :o

Fensport sell the HKS IC for £750+VAT.

Now a Water-Air IC (chargecooler) involves more components (a front rad, pump, quite a bit of hosing if the rad is at the front, etc, etc).

Let's say you do it on the cheap with an ST205CC. That's still gonna cost you £250+ for the IC, about £100 for a rad, about £100 for a pump, maybe another £100 in hoses, and probably another £100 in clips and sundries, and then you've got to make it fit (not as straight forward as you think!). So that brings you to £650. OK, you could do it with ALL second hand bits, but be prepared for a fair bit of head scratching, research and trial and error.

Sure, you can buy some cheap A-A IC cores out there, but is the quality there? You'd be surprised how much you can pay for the core itself. For example, the cores as used on the radiators of F1 cars can cost about £3k for about 15 square inches!! You get what you pay for IMHO.

steve b wrote:p.s. is there a reason no one uses the auxiliary charge cooler on the mr2?

Yes. The more cores you have in series, the more pressure drop across the whole system. The more pressure drop, the harder you have to drive the turbo to achieve the same level of boost. And there'll come a point when this will cause a restriction in flow.

Bottom line. If you want a cheap solution, prepare to get your hands dirty, and get yourself to a scrappy and pick up all the bits you're going to need. It won't be easy!! If you're after a chargecooler that will produce the goods, and someone's done all the hard work for you and developed something that will work and give you excellent power potential, then you'll have to pay for it I'm afraid.

Raymond Pang (400 odd bhp) is running a an uprated i/c and an auxillary chargecooler but the actual cooler is quite small. I would have thought that if you had a decent Chargecooler setup (or a boot mounted i/c :) ) then there wouldn't be a need for both! Plus as with everything on the mr2 there is a space problem!
