[Mk2] [Turbo] Fire/smoke/oil !!!!!

Post by crazygary »

Mr2 turbo rev3
Hi, i was on boost in third gear earlier and all of a sudden smoke came pouring out of the engine cover.

I pulled straight over to check and there were flames on top of the turbo heatshield..

Under closer inspection, an oil breather pipe had popped off the airbox and the opposite side of the engine (cambelt side) was covered in smelly oil :pale:

There was oil everywhere! Intercooler, in hot pipe, in both pipes to intercooler etc.... what a mess!

I'm guessing pressure has built up somewhere??

Anyone had any experience of this or think they know the cause of this?

I have tried a search but to no avail :thumleft:

Do you know for sure if the oil came from the breather hose attached to the airbox? IE is it full of oil if you stick your finger in it...

It wasn't full of oil, but there was plenty in the hotpipe/intercooler pipes and over the intercooler itself.

I don't even think the breather that had popped off is suspect here....

Next step would be to see if there's oil in your airbox I guess. If there's oil on the pressurised side of the turbo (intercooler pipes etc) then it could be turbo seals gone, but if it's in the unpressurised side of the turbo (air intake side) then that's much worse - it means it will have had to have come from the PCV which is the breather hose you mentioned - which should never ever have more than a small amount of oil vapour in it. If the PCV has become pressurised enough to blow that much oil out then your piston rings are toast and your turbo is pressurising the crankcase, forcing the oil out.

From what I understand turbo seals don't normally fail catastrophically as you have described, but more over a period of time (and they usually fail in such a way that puts oil onto the exhaust side of the turbo, not the intake side).

That said I am no mechanic! Everything I've written above is all worst-case stuff, you really need to work out where the oil has come from...

now for sale

Post by crazygary »

After inspecting the turbo - all is well.
So it seems to be the rings....

I have given up and decided to break the car so parts are available in the parts for sale section :pale:

I would certainly get a 2nd opinion by getting a mechanic to take a look at the car before you do that!

comp test

Post by crazygary »

It's gonna have a compression test tomor, so if the engine is good it will be sold as a rolling shell with good rev3 engine after it has been stripped :thumleft:
