I keep contemplating chucking in my rev2 tubby for a rev3, but whats holding me back (apart from the work ive put into it already) is that all the differences are interchangable (ie, turbo, afm, ecu, spoiler) apart from the grey area that is MOT emmisions testing (cat or non-cat). Maybe someone could shed a bit of light on this.
Is it the case that all turbo's dont have to go through the cat test as there is no uk equivalent, or is it date dependent?

I think it depends on the age of your car?

But you don't 'have' to have a cat as long as your emmissions are below the allowable level for a car of that age?

£3.5 will bag you a very nice car. I paid £3700 a year ago for a very, very tidy rev3.

Thanks for the heads up matt, but im not looking to buy just now.

it'll be a few months time.

don't worry, most of those will still be for sale then!

Re: the CAT test. Any import car/engine combination that was never sold officially here is allowed to be tested at the old "non-CAT" MOT emissions standard if it was registered before Aug 1995 (I forget the exact date)

mk2 MR2s were never sold here with the 3S-GTE engine so early 1995 cars and older DO NOT need to pass the latest emissions test on the MOT. In theory it might pass it without a CAT, but it is unlikely. Therefore the tester should re-test the car at the old emissions standard after he has checked his book and found no UK model with the 3S-GTE.

Check with your MOT station that they understand the above. Some garages aren't aware of it and will fail the car. I know one garage who flatly refuse to apply the "loop-hole".

with the rev3 being the more reliable, i hope this any sense.

learn from other peoples mistakes, when i decided i wanted an mr2 turbo i didn't have proper Internet access, decided to go for the rev 1 because it didn't need a cat and i had never heard of a rev3, soon as i did i started saving, reckon i wasted 1 year of car enjoyment and £4000 #-o

rev3 all the way mate :thumleft:
