[Mk2] [Turbo] Why does removing a pipe from my standard bov make my car run?

Post by crazygary »

My rev3 turbo doesnt idle and just dies unless i remove the pipe indicated in the picture below!

(picture is for reference only and not rev3 as you all know!)

WTF lol, seriously, i suspect a blocked breather somewhere?

Surely the car should run poorly/not at all with this removed? It's in reverse!!

Anyone came across this before? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Gareth.

remove the bigger recirc pipe on that bov so it vents to atmosphere and see what happens. Could have a block in the intake/recirc. The stock bov is OPEN until the engine hits positive boost then it closes so i think it'll be needing to use that recirc at idle. :-k

yeah you'll need to bung up the pipe make sure you use something that cant be sucked in like a large bolt or something.
might be worth just removing and checking the inside of the intake piping for any blockages

sounds like your idle up valve is dirty/sticking/faulty.

so when you remove that pipe it allows air past the throttle plate which will increase the rpm, this is the job the IAC vavle should do.

Lee, would the idle up valve happen to be in the area circled below?
If not, can you point it out to me?

has many different names tbh....

some people call it idle up valve, idle control valve, but is actually labelled the idle speed control in the manual...

its located under the throttle body and held in by 4 screws.

bov

Post by crazygary »

could it be that the standard bov is faulty?
The bov on my other car is open at idle..... when i take the pipe off the mr2, and put my thumb over it, the car runs but it idles low/badly.

So when i put the pipe back on the bov, it does the same which indicates to me that the bov is not opening properly at idle..

Can anyone confirm for me how the standard bov works?

Thanks :thumleft:
