[Mk2] [Turbo] Have I got rod knock / bearings on way out???

Post by dunc982 »

Yet another strange noise ive found from this REV2 Turbo ive bought. I had the car idling on the drive, reving it and holding the revs every so often to get it up to temperature. Its running fine with no strange noises at this point.

The gauge eventually gets up to running temp (needle in middle of gauge) and at this point, when I rev it, there is no knocking on way up, but when the revs drop there is a knocking/tapping coming from the top of the engine, and then it idles.

Ive found a few videos on youtube of mr2 engines making a similar noise, but their's was doing the noise when reving both up and down. This persons problem turned out to be bearings.

Heres the vid I found : http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=e-a6xVgKZsA
Sounds a bit like marbles rattling together in a bag.

NOTE: mine only does it when hot and when the revs drop when you rev engine when stationary.

Could this be the rod bearings starting to go?

my rev2 did the above, the bearing had spun and warped the rod

yours sounds like somethings loose to me, have you checked under your cam cover and timing belt cover, is the noise actually coming from inside the engine? its hard to tell sometimes, when my bearing went on me its sounded like the noise was comming from the top of engine
