1 red light means it's a hardware fault. IMHO that means they should repair it free. A games console should last longer than 13 months. If it didn't then it's not fit for purpose.

What's the x clamp herb? If ms don't fix it for free I have a few options. Out of interest what would be the best way to give it 3 red lights?

sounds like the graphic card, but the x-clamp should fix it, it clamps down the chip that lifts off the board due to the heat inside the box. if you want to RROD your machine properly then wrap it in a towel and let it overheat. Although this may actually fix your xbox it'll probs be only for a short while.

Just thinking if MS wont repair it as its only 1 light if it "suddenly" developed all 3 then I could just send it off and claim under the 3 month warranty.
How much does this X clamp thing cost- watching a few youtube vids its unfunny how basic and badly built they are - some of the fixes literally just come down to putting some weight on the scaler chip.
If I do overheat it is there anyway MS might know?
Or should I just say its got 3 lights and send it bck in? Will they ever actually check?

x clamp kits are about £4 from ebay but get the ones with metal washers not the nylon ones.

You can buy it all from a hardware store, but it saves the hassle.
Hardest bit is getting the actual case open. I didnt have an unlock tool.
I'd only suggest this if your competant with intricate electrical items. You tighten one thing too much and your motherboard may crack.
That RROD fix I had came with perfect link to the instructions. I tighentened mine too much, just loosened them abit and its not had one problem(touch wood)
and only try it if MS say send it in, but you have to pay.

Before I try and open it up I am just going to call them and say its RROD'ed and send it back. Its doubtful they will even check and even if they do even less likley that it will make any difference?

When Ive got mine back I doubt it was the same one I sent them, it was a 13month old elite one and although it had been looked after, not dropped or bashed about etc it had tarniushed a bit from my lass using polish on the casing and the chrome front, and there was the old scratch here and there off god knows what, but the one I got backn looks brand new, either its a new case or another one that had been sent in faulty and they just fix them and send them back out to who ever aslong as they get the right model back?

Well thats two failed attempts at getting MS to send me the flipping shipping label! Every time you go through the UPS site its page unavailable!
So had to log the repair yet again! My god, the people they employ in those call centres are utter drones! The woman just kept repeating herself!
Anyway cant really complain to much, the machine will go back if and when they resend the label and they are also giving me a free extra months worth of Live which I was also going to ask about. They still think its 3 lights but having done some searches it seems that they just repair them anyway!
Still quite tempted to get a new one and just sell off the old one when I get it back. Wanna play fable!
