[Mk2] [Turbo] Totally fed up of my mr2 lsd problem????

Post by NORRISMR2 »

Aw just got car back after gettin engine rebuilt due to cracked block, nw theres a weird noise from diff/lsd think...

It occurs when i pull out of a junction in 1st gear sorta a grinding noise then disappears when get up to speed... my mechanic said its a good lsd very tight etc.... im worried its the lsd on the way out... the noise wasnt present before went to mechanics for engine rebuild. he used 80w90 gearbox oil...

the noise is also present when u reverse and then drive forward.. u can feel diff working but my concern is never felt it before...

ive had plated diffs in past on evo's imprezas but not sure if this mr2 has one

any ideas??????

my new gearbox with LSD is fairly noisy. don't forget, its a mid-engined car so all gearbox noises are quite different than wrong-wheel drive cars.

Often... dont look so hard :

Possible brake pads worn - particularly with worn discs....with a large lip on them and often enough... theres 2mm+ of rust on the inside of them ( closest to the hub - centre )... so the pad does show some thickness at the top of the disk... but at the base, could be metal on metal - hence the grinding at low speeds.

Another possibility is a wheel bearing playing up ??!! ......

Did it do it before the engine out?
If not i guess there is a good chance its got the wrong oil in as viscus based lsds need the correct oil, sometimes you can try adding friction modifiers to loosen it up a bit.

just a thought as the box has to be emptied when taken off the engine.

funny you said that :D i was reading lsd, because there is 2 at for sale section

just wonder anybody actually do the process they shown

from their website
Breaking Procedure of new Kaaz LSD

All new Kaaz LSD needs to be broken-in to seat the clutch plates. Applying too much torque when the unit is new will cause damage to the clutch plates and may result in plates forming a angle fit. Once these plates form an angle fit, the LSD is unable to function at 100% efficiency. This will also result in more chattering noise under low speed turns. It is very IMPORTANT to perform the breaking procedure as described below.

for 30 mins non-stop? I highly doubt it. In fact, i doubt anyone does it, as where would you find space to perform that for half an hour?

The wording is wrong on that diagram: acceleration is measured in 'distance per second per second', e.g. 20km/h², not 20km/h as that is velocity.

Sorry, geeky moment! =;
