[Mk2] [NA] URGENT HELP REQUIRED PLZ ...

Post by Amebb »

Hi there

Can anyone help me please. The other day i was driving and went through a large puddle (it had been rainning).

My MR2 then died. The lights were on but the engine had stalled.

I tried to restart the car but everytime i did that all i heard was a 'clunk' noise.

I have taken the starter motor off to see if that is damaged in anyway, but it seems fine.

Does anyone have experience of this fault ?

Please let me know as soon as possible if you have any possible cures...

Thanks

Paul

:-k check all fuses, ht leads, then probably the ignition coil would be my route of diagnosis.

If no joy still, then probably check alternator for loose earth strap or obvious signs of decay.

These things are pretty common problems for MR2's, due to age/design (which was very ahead of its time) but can be kept in good shape with a little bit of TLC.

hope that helps mate. im sure the other guys will have some alternative ideas if my ones dont get you running/grinning again.

Hmmmm, I sense alternator problems. As above check fuses earths etc, bit of WD40 :thumleft:

Do your electrics now work fine?

Just no starting up?

Does the starter motor work?

As above check all leads, take of dizzy cap and check for moisture. I got some waterproof tape and taped around all the ht to dizzy connections, this stopped any future rain related problems.

Non Starting MR2

Post by Amebb »

Hi there

When i turn the ignition key all i get is a clunk sound from the engine bay. Now this is the starter motor solenoid licking in place.

I have removed the starter motor and it seems fine - there was no water in there at all.

So i think that the starter motor relay may need to be checked for any water in there.

Like i said the car has been fine, no issues what so ever apart from when i went through the water .... i know what a spaz!

I will spray WD40 all over the engine etc to make sure that the connectors are all free from moisture.

The ignition leads are fine i think and so is the distrubuter cap.
The main issue is the starter motor dosnt turn the engine.....

Quick question - could the engine have sezised ????

Thanks guys

Just to let you all know that i have fixed the problem.

The mr2 engine (3SGE & 3SGTE) are non contact engines. That means that the valves will not hit the piston heads if somethng goes wrong.

What happened on my engine was, because i went through water and the water got into the engine, past the valves and into the cyclinders. The presure was so much that it bent the conrods.

That is where the problem was - two bent conrods.

They are in the process of being replaced.

Pictures up soon....

Bloody hell, that must have been alot of water to go all the way up through the air filter!

Hi Guys,

I think i was kind of telling a small fib...lol

It was a flooded ford. Water was about 12" deep. But due to the car driving in to the water it caused the water level to rise and come in to the engine bay.
From there it was sucked in by the open air filter and messed up the engine.

Yeah a small puddle does sound a bit stupid ..lol Sorry

but still, to get into the airfilter it would have had to be about 3ft deep

Hi There Sheppy,

When you are driving through water the water comes through the air intake ports on the side of the car faster.

If there was a normal standard air filter then perhaps the water would not have gone into the intake manifold/engine etc.

The airfilter was the K&N open filter part of the induction kit.

And, no the water wasnt 3ft or higher lol

cheers

Hi Sheppy,

Well when i opened up the engine i thought i might as well sort other things out too.
Now what i have done is replaced the damaged conrods, and then replaced the piston rings too as well as the shell bearings.

The valves have been checked and ground in and head skimmed etc.

This will hopefully mean i have the compression as it was with the engine left the factory and with the shell bearings replaced too the engine should last me a long time as long as i dont through any stupid puddles..... ;-)

The cost wasnt that much as i found a supplier that sold me all the stuff at trade prices. Other shops were charging me shed loads for the same stuff.

Yeah i will Sheppy.

The thing is i am working on two projects at the moment. I have two mr2's. one which is a 3sge and the other is the 3sgte.

Both have had new shell bearing, rings, head gasket etc and i have taken loads of pics of the work being done on them.

So, when i get some time i will post them up. They will help me sell the cars when i am ready lol
