[Mk2] [Turbo] Gearbox/driveshaft problem

Post by dawolf »

My car broke down tonight and had to be towed home. Over the last couple of days I'd noticed when pulling away there was a slight jerkiness and a knocking noise from the rear. Anyway, tonight I was pulling away fairly briskly when I heard a loud crunch and suddenly lost all power to the wheels. The engine was still revving away and I could still get the gears but there was no 'drive'. The clutch felt okay. Called out the breakdown service and the bloke reckons it's either a differential gone in the gearbox or the driver's side driveshaft. He said there was slight movement in the rear wheel when moving it. I have a feeling it could be the driveshaft and I kinda hope it is as it's cheaper to fix. I could do without this right now as I have so many things to pay for this month. Typical.

What do others think?

sounds like when my driveshaft went on my old rover. was just pulling out onto a busy 3 lane roundabout at rush hour and bang.......no power to the wheels and just rolled casually to a halt in the middle of all this traffic.
As you said, engine running fine, would go into gear, but lost all its go (not that it had alot before mind...).

I've just had a call from the garage. They said it's the driveshaft joint that fits in the middle. Toyota have quoted £350 plus VAT  . They are going to phone round and try and get a better price. I bloody well hope they can. That's a ridiculous price. The other option is finding someone breaking a turbo. Anyone?

Look on the forefront - its not really a lengthly repair, take about an hour to change out, so NO major labour ££££

Driveshaft.. check with GTSchris.com I'm sure he had one last week !
