I was thinking the same thing but who the hell would read it??

The only way to get any response is to ruin another thread. No-one wants to know.

Already apologised to the OP Amelio but if it'll make you feel better I'll likewise apologise to you for "ruining" the thread. I will point out though my initial post simply suggested learning the guitar was the best way to improve playing skills. Since then all I've done is respond to others comments which have themselves focused on the 'green' stuff I initially just mentioned in passing in my second post (with my focus being on the fact that if you learn an actual instrument you can do so much more with it... including being creative and individual). Hope now you're all happy again and you can go back to discussing whatever it was you were discussing.

And if the other group of scientists are right then we don't need to worry at all. Truth is no-one knows for sure no matter which side of the fence they sit on. As for myself, I quite like to think that humanity is pretty good at inventing things when it needs them to survive (like fire, the wheel, sliced bread) so even if climate change is all true then we'll simply have to invent something that creates a new atmosphere for the planet. Sorted. :thumleft:

Also, you can enjoy playing both GH/RB and the instruments themselves. I bought myself a drum kit on the strength of how much I loved the drums on RB and I don't regret it for one second. That kit now sits alongside my guitars and basses that I owned before I ever picked up a plastic guitar with coloured buttons and without RB I would never have bought it. Truth it, the GH/RB series is encouraging kids to pick up an instrument when they might never have thought about it before.

i started playing real guitar because of guitar hero, i was getting tired of playing the solos on a plastic guitar and wanted to be able to play them for real.
its much different but gh does help some what.
playing on hard or expert helps you move your fingers faster so that helped me a hell of alot for real guitar.
i started playing in feb last year and now i can play
the trooper
lay down
unholy conffesions
crazy train
some of cannon rock
half of cliffs of dover
several disturbed songs
several machine head songs
and lots of mini solos/scales
i know most of those off from guitar hero but they are real fun to play.
guitar hero is great fun and by the time u can play expert confindently id say take a bash at the real guitar :thumleft:

Highwaystar dont worry too much, I rant like i'm agressive but really I'm not.

Just so we're clear, the reason I dont care about climate change is that I think it's a load of &***(^ quite frankly.

Until they prove it then I dont care. Climate will change if we were here or not, it did that, we know it did that and it will do that.

So any way - any more useful tips on me shredding those solo's?

Matt.... not a problem mate. I will point out that in the AC/DC thread you just asked for an opinion on the game and I was the first to reply with mine. It's a bit out of order asking for an opinion on a forum then slagging the first guy to reply for having his and expressing it but I'm basically an easy going bloke so no worries eh?
Amelio... you want to tell me which other threads I've ruined so I can reply? You can PM me.

The only thing I can suggest re the fingering techniques is just simple practice. Used to know a guitarist who carried an old fretboard off some ancient guitar round with him so he could practice fretting certain sequences of chords/notes at work or wherever but I was never sure how that helped. How would he know he was hitting the correct notes properly without hearing them? That said many guitarists do practice finger 'exercises' to improve the muscles and ultimately I guess the dexterity.

I remember when i first got it my fingers just weren't used to those movements and i could only play easy with 3 notes. Then i realised it was totally unrealistic and boring so moved up to medium. For a little while my little finger with like a lifeless appendage. It just didn't seem to have any life in it. Then medium too got boring and easy and unrealistic. So i cracked on with hard. It is bloody hard on guitar hero 2 & 3 where as i found rock band much easier. One day i will get a real guitar but the fact is, even if i do and even if i get good at it all i'm gonna play is the guitar part of the song. I'm not going to get the full music which is why i like the games. I don't just like guitars, i like music.

I think I need to do 3 more songs on each to finish them but just can't bloody do it.

On III it's Slayer, Metallica and Iron Maiden. The main problem I have is when you have the diagonal rows of notes IE very fast green, red, yellow, blue and orange all in quick sucession (or any combo of them)

Any tips on how to roll these notes off without my fingers freezing solid and not getting them?

What doesnt help is that the star power activates when I dont want it to and when I'm in trouble I dont have it any more ](*,)

make sure you're doing the hammer on and pull offs correctly, you won't need to even strum if you get it right!!

Yep! :thumleft: One strum, get the hammer on's right....4-5 notes played with ease!

HighwayStar wrote:Sorry but yes you could play anything.... on the guitar. I'm not suggesting learning the guitar will increase your piano playing or drumming skills but what will you be able to accomplish after mastering guitar hero? Nothing more than the ability to mime to another persons music.... my brother and I were doing that with cricket bats 30yrs ago without the need to spend £100s on a game which then requires us to produce more electricity to play it when we're now well aware of global warming and how we're generating it.
Bottom line is like everything else nowadays people want instant gratification and the kudos or rewards of a skill without actually putting in the required effort to learn it. Buy the acoustic and in 2yrs rather than having a redundant game worth next to nothing and which has demanded electricity every time it's been used you'll still have the acoustic, be able to play any guitar at any party or event where there is an instrument and have the ability to produce unique music that reflects your own ideas and emotions.
Sorry but Guitar Hero is just air guitar with really expensive as well as polluting air...

Sorry mate, TOTALLY disagree with what you've said.

GH DEFINATELY improves hand/eye co-ordination and a good sense of rhythm. A few of my mates (Pistol Pete included) had a shocking state of rhythm (no offence buddy!  )...but since playing GH their hand-eye co-ordination is far better than what it would be if they had just gone out and bought a real guitar and sat learning some cords.

As Pete had already said, I play drums and guitar so my sense of rhythm is very good, but GH definately improved it and has added more dexterity to my playing, which WILL make you a better guitar player.

GH is all about learning something new, having a damn good laugh and feeling like a rock god!...which you do when you nail damn hard solo's on Expert! 8)

Well we're all entitled to opinions Thai, no problem. I still contend it will have trouble making you a better guitar player if you don't actually play a guitar though.... I've been talking 'bout one versus the other.... don't think I've even mentioned hand/eye coordination and still reckon to be a better guitar player you should just practice more guitar. Happy for you to disagree though. :thumleft:

PS. Matt.... did you ever cop a listen to the guitar work in 'Highway Star'?

I reckon if you plugged into a 200watt Marshall stack and turned it up to 11 that might work.... sort of!!

Yeah, good choice. I tend to like the faster stuff which I find more exciting. Ever heard Eddie Van Halens 'Eruption'? Mind blowing stuff. His work on Michael Jacksons 'Beat It' isn't too shabby either. For me it's the older stuff, but then I am getting old... Van Halen and Hendrix etc (his 'Star Spangled Banner' from Monterey Pop or Woodstock is just inspired) but Blackmore is still the daddy of the get ready here it comes solo spot.

Beat It is on GHWT, quite enjoy the little riff on that and can play it on hard, unlike the songs I listed earlier

Now you're talking mate! 8) 2 of my favourite solo's!

Dont get me wrong mate, I'd pick a real guitar over GH ANYDAY but GH is a damn good laugh and definately improves your hand/eye co-ordination for sure, which in turn, 'will' make you a better guitar player. It has me. :thumleft:

A extended live version:

If your stuck on slayer....

When you boot up your console and guitar....

Sit it on your knee normally with the neck at a 45 degree angle upwards and tilted slightly backwards so you can see more of the strum bar, frets, face.. etc

Should stop it going off randomly.

As for the song, I presume your stuck on mosh 1?

Very hard. Try expert. hahaha.

What you need to do is go back a few songs.

Cult of personality, knights of cydonia. Even Priestess - lay down. The hammer ons are importent.

Practice those bad boys on hard or better on expert KOC & COP are quite hard especially if you can't do slayer yet. When you can 4 star them on expert and easily 5 star them on hard you should breeze though slayer with a few tries. Star power to be saved for when you go into the red.

666 - easy!!!!!! use ur thumb to press the strum bar quickly, practice previous songs and 5 star them first :) Soon as you get that intro done, save your SP for the end or if you fail as the intro repeats.

One - Realy easy till the end, stuck on the hammer ons and hammer offs?

Save your SP, try your best to get as far into them as you can without using it. Its quite long and go's into another straight after (still same solo, but different pattern) Once thats clear, wuite hard to fail really :)

If you got an x box add me on live can do some co-op and il show you ;)
or even GHWT or RB2.. etc :thumleft: 360 live GT is - SliCkMiX

With One I can get pretty much 100% with ease up until you get the really fast succession of greens with a red thrown in, forget the name of the part of song. That's when my meter starts to dip but I can get through that and stay in the yellow green. Annoying though, no matter what I do, star power goes off near the end and runs out before the next bit which is just insane quite frankly. The speed at which those waves of notes come is too fast for my eyes to read, my brain to act and my fingers to move.

Fair play to the Metalica guitarist who plays that, he must have a way with the ladies if he can move his fingers like that
