Remote Boot Pop?

Post by viperrr »

I bought a solenoid a few months back to go on my newly installed remote central locking unit, as I have a third button on the remote that can be used to operate something else.

I've only just got round to actually looking in the boot today, and there doesn't really seem to be much room to mount and fit a solenoid to give me remote boot pop.

Has anyone else successfully managed to install something like this? :-k

Cheers,
Nick

I've done something similar for the engine cover, with a switch on the dash on to release it

I looked at the boot release at the same time and it shouldn't be difficult, a lot will depend on what kind of linkage goes on the solenoid

Ahh thanks jimi.

I think my main problem is the size and shape of the solenoid I bought:

Where did you get hold of your much flatter one? I think something like that would fit more easily.

It was a door lock solenoid of a Mitsibushi I think, and I've no idea which model it was. The type you have normally come with an operating rod which allows you to have the solenoid a fair distance away. Another option is to use a length of Bowden cable (same as the throttle cable) to move it to a more suitable location. You can buy lightweight stuff in short lengths pretty cheaply, used for RC cars/planes/boats or even an old boot/bonnet/engine cover release cable.
The other problem you will find is the the solenoid is powered both ways, ie signal for out and signal for in, that can be overcome with the use of a relay if the solenoid has internal switches, which mine had.
What you really need is a spring return solenoid ( only powered in one direction) but they are harder to come by and usually more expensive.

I'll have a think about somewhere more distant I could place it.

Also when it operates, won't it pop out when it's set off and then when the boot closes, the catch mechanism would push the solenoid back into place - ready to pop out again next time?

Looking at your pic I think you'll find that it's not actually a solenoid, it's a motor driven actuator and it's quite stiff to push /pull with no power. Try pulling /pushing it with no power on and you'll find out. The latch mechanism (if it's like the engine bay one) won't do it.
Also if it's like the engine bay one ( and I've no reason to think it isn't then you'll need a pulling action to release the catch. If you have the trim panel off, operate it by hand, it's fairly obvious how it works once you see it operating.

This is the boot pop kit i used with my falcon alarm, mounted to the right of the catch it uses a cable and hook to pull the release. Works perfect everytime....

Ahh cheers, this looks like it could be a solution if mine doesn't work.

jimi - the rod that goes in and out of my solenoid unit is actually very easy to move by hand. I think I need to connect it up to a power supply to find out what all the various wires make it do, as there are 5 in total.

8) Looks like it may be a solenoid type after all. If it has 5 wires then it's a master, which means that it has a internal switch, it's menat to send a signal to the other solenoids when you move that solenoid manually ( ie using the key to unlock the door) I should have the connections for that type somewhere, I'll have a look.

Sorry can't find it, I do have them somewhere because I fitted that type to my son's little Cinq

Edit
Found them
Green - motor/solenoid coil
Blue - motor/solenoid coil
Black - microswitch common
White - microswitch normally open
Brown - microswitch normally closed

No worries, I'll have a good trial and error session when this weather clears up!

Cheers for looking though :thumleft:

I have a knackered one lying in the garage that I opened up, it looks identical to your pic and it's definitely motor driven not a solenoid.

ah balls ok.

I'll give it a shot (with not so permanent mounts) and see what happens
