Decided to buy a PS3 - couple of questions...

Post by fizz »

Also what best one to go for?

Having read up a little via this link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

I have realised that i 'need' the 60Gb PAL one as the PAL 80Gb one is not PS2 compatibal and nor does it have the flash card readers which i would deffo make use of.

In addition to that it only has 2 as opposed to 4 usb points.....

If this info correct and if so where do i find myself a new PAL 60GB one since they have stop manufacturing it? :-k

Cheers in advance :thumleft:

You'll be very lucky mate tbh.

Glad you've decided on a ps3 tho, it's def the best all rounder at the moment imo.

Aye.. i thought as much... any idea as to why they got rid of the extra bits on the 80Gb? Seems like they are going backwards.

Also i want to be able to play my old PS2 games on there as well... is there any way of getting the 80GB ones to do this?

Main reason i have chosen the PS3 over the Xbox is for the blueray and also i own a PSP which i will be able to use in conjunction with the PS3.

If you buy it as a PS3 you dont need to worry about playing ancient PS2 games on it. I take it you still have a PS2? Just keep it and if you feel the need to play that, use that.

Why would you possibly need 4 USB ports?

As for the card reader, just get a USB one if you absolutely must put memory cars in there for what ever reason.

PES is something that is still played on a regular basis in my house and as such i need the PS3 to be backward compatibal to save space and not have 2 consoles out...

Yes i can get a usb card reader but i want a clean system without additional things hanging from it where there is no need.

As it stands it looks like the 80Gb is the only real option i have so i may have to take your suggestions on board but really do want backward compatability! :(

Is 2nd hand an option? You could probably pick up an original 60gb on the Bay of E.

extra expense for what is essentially the same game.. lol

Ive tried it on the PS3 and the game play aint much different to warrent spending more monies for a game which just looks a bit better... [-( :oldtongue:

Good choice Fizz :thumleft:

Production cost is the reason why they got stripped out (and early Jap/US machines had found exploits via the built in SD card reader to run PS1/2 backups)

PS2 emulation is still a big possibility for all PS3's as they're looking at a software/firmware update to allow it but nothing is confirmed yet.

I thought the UK 60gb PS3s ran PS2 games via software anyway? i remember reading that the US versions had a proper PS2-on-a-chip (emotion chip?) inside them but that was dropped for the UK market, instead favouring software emulation. I can't see why the newer PS3s can no longer run PS2 games if this is the case.

You could be right but i think some early EU machines had been found to have the Emotion chip too? In the States they started rolling out 60gigs without the Emotion around the same time.

If you dont think there's any difference between PES on the PS3 to the PS2 you might as well not bother getting the PS3 then?

Come on dude, get into the 21st century, the next gen machines absolutely own the PS2 and original Xbox!

Admittedly I've never played PES on the PS2 but I have on the PS3 and I cant believe they're alike.

I know Fifa 09 is simply stunning on the 360/PS3 and could never be re-created like that on the PS2

Time to let go mate and move on me thinks :thumleft:

hahaha.... :)

I just have a lot of old PS2 games which my little cousins still love playing as well ya see and to save space (the PS3 aint exactly small is it) id rather have just the one on show...

Got a Wii sat there as well... getting a bit crowded!

Lets hope what Andy says is true and that they sort out some future update to play them. :)

In all fairness, when the next gen comes out I would hope they'd be backwards compatible if only for me to play all my Guitar Hero / Rock Band games without buying new ones and new guitar!

And yes, the PS3 is 'king huge in comparison to a PS2 and bloody heavy too.

I own Pro Evo 2008 for PS2 & PS3 and it isn't a great game to run side by side if you was to show off the next gen hardware, It just looks a bit better if you ask me.
