Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
Started refurbishing, but i don't think i'll get the results i want by hand.
anyone know the cost (ballpark figures) of having wheels shotblasted? i'll do the painting myself, but i can't sand the wheels as much as i'd like...
can anyone recommend a place to do it in the midlands?
Just in case you can't find a shot blaster, be warned, I tried laquering an OEM revision 2 alloy recently with cellulose laquer and the old paint reacted with the new. Just in a few places oddly, but bad enough to seriously annoy you if you wanted a perfect finish. Luckily I was only doing a rush job on a spare wheel so I wasn't too bothered; glad to find out.
You could try paint stripper to remove all the paint, that often is a better use of time than trying to sand the old paint smooth, but it still takes ages, depending on the paint.
i did use stripper, but the corrosion has still pitted the wheels pretty badly. i started sanding after the stripper but i'm having trouble getting into some of the corners and they just don't look as good as i'd like them to look before i start priming/painting/lacquering... so i thought i'd find a professional to strip them.... that way i can convince myself that i'm starting with the best possible surface...
You'll never get a finish as good as the pro's.
If you're going to have the wheels blasted you may as well get them painted/laquered
I used these recently http://www.sweeneysherlock.co.uk/alloy.htm £140 for 4x16" wheels.
Can't praise them enough. Absolutely fantastic job and the laqueur they use is proper stuff unlike the Toyota poo. Wash the wheels every week and they are like new. The brake dust doesn't seem to stick at all.
You won't like what I've just done to a set of Mk1a wheels then! Bought for £20, wire brushed and painted with fluorescent yellow which turned green due to the use of grey primer!
Coming to a track near you!
If you know a local garage that will de-tyre for you cheaply, I used an industrial shotblast place. £60 to blast and powder coat 4 off 15" alloys, bargain, get the yellow pages out and go visiting.
Limited choice of colours however if you want something unusual.
