LSD

Post by Celesa »

I have a strange whine (sounds like something spinning) whenever I rev my vehicle when stationary, does a LSD cause such a sound.

When I bought my car the gear box seals looks to like new (re-sealed) I just wonder could this be a LSD fitted in it?

No, because the diff isn't rotating when you are stationary

It's a worn clutch release bearing most likely. Don't worry about it.

Here's a good way to find out if you've got an LSD or not:

1) find a straight empty bit of road.
2) depress clutch, dial up 5000 Rpm, engage 1st, release clutch, hang on.
3) stop car, get out and count the lines.

Results:
0 lines = you weren't trying! Do it again, properly this time!
1 line = no LSD, you have a bog standard MR2
2 lines = You can has LSD! (you god you)
Car hasn't moved, smell of burnt asbestos hanging in the air = your 100k mile clutch has just died, replace and retry.

There you go, foolproof!

Well you could do all that, but i think most of us would be 99.9% certain he doesn't have an LSD as NA's never had them.

Your method is not foolproof though because if you are going in a straight line it is possible to leave two black lines with an open diff.

Thanks for the replies;

Can't test car yet as it is being resprayed; all I can do is start it up while it is stationary.and rev the hell out of it.

ahh. Lift rear of car in air, with it in neutral turn one of the wheels by hand. If the other wheel turns the same way then LSD, if it turns the other way no LSD. :+:

Er call me silly, but I would guess the 'whine' is the supercharger kicking in

You can watch it engage simply by looking at it from the top of the engine bay and give it a bit of throttle. As hinted at above, it's not ideal for these engines to be revved a lot from cold.

Perhaps this a silly question but have you thought that it may be the bearing on your alternator I had one start to go 11 years or so ago and it sounded great  ,
Like a super super charger  ,

This was a whine that increased with rev's etc.

I'm getting a whining that increases with revs which I suspected was this problem, but I wasn't quite sure. Now I'm more confident, so it's worth taking the alternator apart again :o

Hello

I did check with my mechanic, he said he trace the sound back to the gearbox, thats what is puzzling me!

As I bought the car used and my mechanic confirmed the gearbox seal looks like new. Possible they fitted after market gears?

I am all confused

I think if you had straight cut gears you would definately know about it because the whine would be very loud indeed. This is incredibly unlikely. Never heard of someone fitting aftermarket gears to an E51 box.

if you had LSD these symptoms would be very likely! just ride it out, try not think to hard about existential stuff, and in about 6-8 hours you should start to come down. no Pink Floyd either.

Easy test.... Take belt off and run engine without belt..

Don't run it for long, you'll have no water pump with the belt off

We diagnosed two things responsible for whining noises (not the SC)

1] Idler pulleys - check both Altenator and SC idlers. Both ours needed replacing.
2] Water pump.

Also make sure the belts are seated correctly and are all straight
