I'm afraid we all know that a ps3 can't function without a HDD, your precious bluray isn't upto the job i'm afraid #-o

HD-DVD's are dead.

Tbh I hardly ever buy films on DVD or Blu-ray.

Oh dear its the old fanboi tastic post once again. We all know that there is an advantage to having a hard disc drive. And we all know that game development has been limited because the 360 doesn't have a HDD as standard.

how was i being a fanboy? i'm sure you know that the 360 doesn't use hd-dvds for games? it's an optional add on.

And i hardly think it's a fanboy statement to point out that the ps3 NEEDS a hdd as bluray players are inadequate at this moment in time, that's not fanboy, it's fact.

how has game development been limited?? dvd drives can read up 40x i think, blurays 4x, you can see why one needs a hdd and one doesn't, PCs are the true benchmark of gaming boundaries and i don't think there's a huge gap, have you seen how many PC games are published on bluray?

You seem to forget the PS3 can happily read DVD at 'normal' speeds too.
Xbox 360 has a 12x DVD drive ( http://features.teamxbox.com/xbox/1245/ ... 0-FAQs/p1/ ), IIRC PS3 can read DVD at 16x, although I can't find the specsheet at the mo - so assume it can also read DVD at 12x, if things were such an issue for a developer, they could just bung the game on DVD9 and PS3 could happily run from the DVD, they don't have to use BluRay if speed is such an issue. Developers want to use the HDD for the same reason developers always utilise the HDD in PCs. A one time install can pay dividends during the game.

Think about that for a second and the answer will cometh. BluRay players on PCs aren't very common yet - what would be the point of stamping disks in a format that isn't widely used yet?
They *know* every PS3 has a BluRay player so can use BluRay as a format without needing to cater for lesser specced systems.
I'm sure BluRay will get up to speed in the PC world soon enough, do you think people would prefer to install a game from 5 DVDs or just stick one BluRay disk in? HD video isn't particularly compact in size, cut-scenes and HD content is becoming widespread and the need for greater storage will reach critical mass soon enough, then the break to an HD format disk will happen - the exact same reason why games on DVD was unheard of for a while, CDs were more than fine, who needed more than 700mb on a disk eh!

well according to google the PS3 delayed GTA aswell so i guess they had problems with both?

Lauren i have a HDD to play demos easily. Not because i NEED it to play games full stop.

and goto, why dont they use DVD instead of making you HAVE to do installs when the 360 equivalent runs off the disc?

doesnt make sense.

the install definately doesnt give you any advantage so why do it?

what a ridiculous concept, if anything the HDD has hindered peoles enjoyment of games, the majority of games now are released before they're really finished because the developers just assume that people will be happy to wait 2 or 3 weeks for the patch to be released and download, which is bad for gamers, just ask anybody who bought pro evo 2008 for the ps3, the online section was screwed.

Did you need a Hdd for the ps2? of course you didn't because the games were finished before they were released. Still at least you can make a positive out of a negative :thumleft:

Do you have a HDD on your Xbox 360? If so please explain why.

So you have a HDD because otherwise it is not possible to download demos?

Does your HDD serve any other purpose perchance?

If the HDD is so unecessary why do you have one?

Lauren, you are as much, if not more of a Sony fanboi (girl) as any one is an Xbox fanboi, if you cant see that then I'm worried.

I bought my 360 used from a mate. He'd had it a year and never once plugged it into the net to use Xbox Live. He had bought a HDD to go with it but it was still in the box unopened. He just used a memory card to save his games and it suited him fine.

He bought a PS3 not long after that and after god knows long of owning it looked surprised when I said I use it online to get updates etc so again, he isnt using the HDD other than to be forced to save his games.

Simple fact here is that because Microsoft had the noddle to at least OFFER the option of not having a HDD and HD DVD option then they could sell the consoles cheaper and opened the market up to more people. You'd be amazed at how many people there are too that dont have HD TV's so what's the point in them having the Bluray player?

It is nice having it all out of the box for some one like me who HAD £350 lying around to spend and an HD TV to make use of it. But tbh, if I was still using a CRT TV and was on more of a budget I wouldnt have bought one.

It really does get boring, the PS3 lot are so defensive and usually come across as quite angry, you cant even make a joke these days without them turning into a multipage war on what's best.

Stinks of inferiority to me but hey ho :eye:

haha well it may seem that way but we never know really. I got a 360 and I think ps3 in its own right is a fantastic machine! the only reason I havent got a ps3 is cus I got no reason to get one.

neither machine is gonna outlast the other because so many people have 360's and game developers are not gonna miss out on all that revenue by giving ps3 exclusive games like they did with the ps2.

We just have to learn to get along until the next gen consoles come out and see what happens then.

I have a feeling sony will fair better on the next gen but then again thats just my opinion and I have an xbox!

If the machine was hidden from sight and I had a nuetral controller (IE not MS or PS) I wouldnt know what machines I was playing on.

They go about their business in different ways but the end result is pretty much identical.

Except one costs £300 and the other costs £159

I guess if you think about it with the ps3 your paying give or take £150 for the blue ray player and ms released the hd-dvd player it was £130 but that format died. If ms were to release a blue ray add on which would be pointless! you end up paying almost as much as the ps3.

Are all the ps3 games in blue ray format or they use the dvd-rom facility?

I dont know what mkv is but the fact the Wii doesnt even play DVD's suggests that aint gonna happen!

And yes, all PS3 games are on Bluray disc which forces them as far as I'm aware to include the Bluray player in the console.

I bought mine because I wanted a bluray player but I know a lot of people who have no interest in that at all, that's where I think they fudged themselves a little.

Can any one answer this as well.

1st PS3 released 60gb = £425
2nd PS3 was 40gb which reduced the price to £300
Newest PS3 = 80gb and still costs £300?

I think if you're looking for a source to watch high def movies, play games, use as a media centre the PS3 has it licked.

If you just want to play games I think they're over priced.

If they're the same, why did you buy a PS3? It has more features warranting the extra money. Mind you, I think the reliability is worth a premium too.

The fact I still buy games for the 360 over the PS3 says it all.
