The reason the HD player is so cheap for the Xbox is because HD,DVD's have flopped and Bluray is in total command of the HD disc arena.

That is why you can pick up a brand new HD DVD player with 8 films for a mere GBP75 on ebay you can also get the films for as little as GBP2 this purely because they are selling off existing stock. :thumleft:

This is good if you want to build up a cheap HD collection but it wont last long as there are fewer and fewer HD disc's left

I dont think he meant the £20 HD DVD drive for the xbox - rather the £129 360 with no hard drive.

Sony only have the all singing all dancing 40/60/80gb HD models costing around £300

Sorry mate, the reason the Xbox is so cheap is that it has been around long enough to knock them out that cheap.

The PS3 will go down eventually but the only way you're likely to see one that cheap in the near future is if Sony make one that DOESNT play Blurays and have an HDD which wont happen and would defeat the object.

The panasonic Blu-ray players play divx and can be brought for around £200. Do your parents not deserve a £300 PS3 present?

Well lets face it Sony are hardly likely to take a backwards step with the PS3 are they? I suppose what they could do is remove the HDD, remove blu-ray capability, then stick some really noisy fans on it, leave a heatsink problem and use a format that is dead in the water. But what's the point the Xbox already does all that very effectively.

Having to wrap your console in a towel? WTF is that all about? :-:

Oh lets not go there shall we every one. I wasn't knocking the ps3 if anything i was sticking up for the price of the thing for once. Sony only seem interested in selling it as a complete package playing bluray straight out of the box and fitting a hard drive. That's entirely up to them. I'm saying the reason the xbox can be had so cheaply is because it DOESN'T have those things in the package. Some see it as not being "advanced" or what ever. The rest see it as a cheap way of getting a top games console. I know quite a few people for example who have no bluray discs and have never used psn or saved anything other than the game to the hdd. So in effect a good chunk of the money they spent is wasted.

errr, you think dvd's are dead? out of interest how many blurays do you own? or do you know the percentage of games that are manufactured on bluray?!?! maybe 25%? and thats being very generous.

I'm afraid we all know that a ps3 can't function without a HDD, your precious bluray isn't upto the job i'm afraid #-o

HD-DVD's are dead.

Tbh I hardly ever buy films on DVD or Blu-ray.

Oh dear its the old fanboi tastic post once again. We all know that there is an advantage to having a hard disc drive. And we all know that game development has been limited because the 360 doesn't have a HDD as standard.

HD-DVDs are not dead just yet, hmv still stock some. I cashed in on them and have over 30 now. Some only cost me 99p and the player was the same price as an upscaling DVD player.

Lauren, you can't go calling some one a fanboi when that is EXACTLY what you are. What's the advantage exactly of having the hard drive? Saving the game to it so you wait 20 seconds for it to load instead of 25 seconds. Really worth the premium that.

All I try to do is add some balance to the addled brains of some Xbox owners.

The advantage of the HDD is that everybody can benefit from updates not just to the system but also the games.

I suppose it is fairly useful for game saves too and downloading content/demos etc, which i'm not sure how you do that on a non-HDD 360.

Put it this way is there anyone on here with a 360 that has not bought the HDD for it?

LOL no we dont!!!

What a load of crap.

The only game thats ever been held back was GTA and that was because of the PS3.

Name a game that uses the HDD to get an advantage over the 360 version.

You seem to miss the point entirely that the ONLY reason PS3 titles use HDD installs is because the drive is too slow to run it any other way.

No because the devs want to use it to speed things up.

Do you have a HDD on your Xbox? If so please explain why.

how was i being a fanboy? i'm sure you know that the 360 doesn't use hd-dvds for games? it's an optional add on.

And i hardly think it's a fanboy statement to point out that the ps3 NEEDS a hdd as bluray players are inadequate at this moment in time, that's not fanboy, it's fact.

how has game development been limited?? dvd drives can read up 40x i think, blurays 4x, you can see why one needs a hdd and one doesn't, PCs are the true benchmark of gaming boundaries and i don't think there's a huge gap, have you seen how many PC games are published on bluray?

what a ridiculous concept, if anything the HDD has hindered peoles enjoyment of games, the majority of games now are released before they're really finished because the developers just assume that people will be happy to wait 2 or 3 weeks for the patch to be released and download, which is bad for gamers, just ask anybody who bought pro evo 2008 for the ps3, the online section was screwed.

Did you need a Hdd for the ps2? of course you didn't because the games were finished before they were released. Still at least you can make a positive out of a negative :thumleft:

Errrrr, no.
Rockstar openly say that the 360 held back GTA, they wanted to use HDD across all platforms but because of the XBox they struggled somewhat -
Google 'til your heart's content, Rockstar have stated this many times.

"The Xbox 360's lack of a guaranteed hard disk is creating limitations in Grand Theft Auto IV's development, Rockstar has acknowledged.
Rockstar's creative vice president Dan Houser was asked: "On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?" To which he replied, "Yep.""

This will become more of an issue as time marches on, games get bigger and bigger, requiring more & more space - cut scenes, textures, music, video etc, games will start going multi-disk on the 360 before long, lack of HDD will mean disk swapping fun.
As someone said on this thread, PCs are the benchmark of gaming - so how many PCs games run straight from the disk? NONE! They ALL install to the HDD. They're DVD equipped, but yet still choose to install to HDD, why is that do you think? :-k
