X Box 360 - How reliable are they ? Years..... Weeks..... Hours?????

Post by Andy-Runner »

Hi all,

My game console knowledge is limited to say the least, despite having owned both PS3 and XBOX: 360 i have never been able to get into the whole gaming thing and have sold both having used them rarely if at all. ](*,)

However the g.f younger brother is wanting a 360 Elite for Christmas from us both ( , what's wrong with an orange and a bag of peanuts in his stocking?.... :-k ) however after reading a few threads both on IMOC and other websites, it appears Microsoft seem to have a a full time job on replacing/repairing knackered 360's.

I just wondered HONESTLY how reliable 360's are or whether they really do break down/ Ring of Death as regularly as it first appears?? If so we are both thinking of steering him towards either a wii(?) or PS3.

Any help, experience or thoughts welcomed

Many thanks in advance...

the elites are meant to of been sorted now and your hardly gonna see people posting threads saying "my console works great today" are ya?

thats why it looks so negative.

i went through a few consoles going back 2 years but its been working fine ever since then and they fix it for free anyway.

As SamUK says, the later revisions are a lot more reliable than the older ones. I won't say that you won't have any problems with them, but even so, Microsoft are repairing them for free for 3 years anyway (As long as it's the dreaded red ring failure, one year otherwise).

Go for it :)

yeah man, min'es been sppot on since i got it, i'm running it wirelessly and can stream from my pc etc, i have windows media centre edition on my pc, it's the best thing ever, and i have BT vision, they have just announced that people with x boxs will be able to use their xbox as another bt vision box!!

or i could put a tv tuner in my pc and stream the tv upstair to my xbox, it's a mighty powerful tool, i'd recommend one to anybody, my mate is a games developer and he says most of the games are deigned for the xbox first then converted for the ps3.

I think you can get 60gb white 360's for about £160 now?

Elite is a waste of money, you'll never use up that 120gb HDD and THAT's what your paying for. The actual console is the same as the white ones inside.

agreed, i just got the 20gb hard drive, you don't need space if you stream from your pc, i don't store anything on it, everything is on my pc, you can stream avi files which is awsome!!!

it also does slideshows and music, my xox is miles away from my pc and it does it flawlessly!!!

does it do it wirelessly tho? I tried mine and couldn't do it, my 360 and PC are in the same room but my router is in a different room, apparently it'll work fine if only one device is wireless but when they're both wireless it stutters way too much :(

As for the elite, worth the money, just cos they it matches all my AV equipment :thumleft:

That's all a bit over my head tbh.

I often watch football on my PC via live streaming, is there any way to like that to my 360 and watch it in my room on my TV?

mine is wireless, my pc is hard wired and so is my bt vision box so i'm not sure about it working if only one device is wireless. make sure it has the clearest route possible, i.e. i have a fridge in my room and the xbox was at one side of it meaning the fridge was kind of in the way and it wouldn't work at all, i moved it to the other side and it worked perfectly, i can even stream tv through my windows media centre up to the x box!!!!!

very clever machine!!!

theres a tutorial somewhere on the xbox site about networking your PC to your 360, think you need a media centre enabled PC tho, it's a cartoon tutorial and all presented in laymans terms

not sure if you could do it through from PC -> 360, i just connect my PC directly to my AV receiever and it sends it to the TV, jobs a good un :thumleft:

Need to get yourself an AV receiver mat and some decent speakers, especially if you want to fully enjoy bioshock 2!

Ah, that explains it, you need at least one hardwired to the router :(

Nice to know you can stream internet tv as well :thumleft:

i don't know if it NEEDS to be hard wired, i doubt it in fact, wireless router should be able to do more than one wireless thing at a time, check the signal level on your xbox, then assuming it's weak try moving it around till it improves, that's basically what i did.

you really can't get a better media setup than an xbox with media centre!!

Had my Elite for well over a year now, use it nearly everyday, never had a problem with it. O:)

As Sam said, people moan about the ones that go wrong, not all the millions that are fine.

The Elite's are excellent, looks better, quieter, bigger HD, better dvd drive, HDMI cable and better componants. :thumleft:

I was under the impression they'd all be brought into line with each other now. My white arcade one has HDMI connection on it.

Tell me about it   - I don't mind too much, every time we visit he normally cleans my car for me (even when i turn up in my old mans Navara  ) He's a pretty sound lad too 8)

Thanks for the responses though lads, i understand "most" of whats been posted :-s

If i can get away with buying him a white xbox i.e. cheaper i will, but if not the Elites sound quite reliable :)
