Who else drives an automatic MR2?

Post by Peter C »

Do you drive with the overdrive switched on or off?

I tend to find that driving around town (sub 40MPH) it's "easier" for the engine if the overdrive is switched off whilst on the open road the higher gearing provided by the overdrive offers quieter and more economical cruising.

We will soon be able to offer a flappy paddle gearshift conversion for all auto owners,a TB member has developed the kit which we will shortly be fitting to autos both in normal engined and v6 form.

We have been testing the system and up to now it changes just as quick as any production flappy paddle system, plus for normal engined auto's you will have the option of flicking a switch and going back to full auto mode.

The control it gives you is amazing, redlining in gear instead of the ecu changing up :thumleft:

Im not sure that i can give an actual price just yet,the kit is still to be finalized and the flappy paddle type that will come with each kit sorted out (looking like wireless ones at the minute).

As soon as we know more i will start a thread in the affiliates section.

Thats quite a bold statement!! Are you suggesting that it can change gear as fast as some of the top marques that use the flappy paddles??

i would love to see it if it can :thumleft:

yes i am... its fantastic,to be honest im very surprised by the lack of enthusiasm for this,in my opinion it's one of the best modifications to hit the Mr2 scene in years,if not all time.

We will have a working demo car in the future that people can come test drive for themselves, better to make your own mind up about these things.

When we first hooked the system up we never expected it to be as good as it is,i thought it would be clonk,clonk,whirr....finally engage a gear... but it's pretty instantaneous on upshifts and downshifts.

Interesting, wonder if it'll work on the Supra?

hi michael, pretty sure it will work on the supra,it might mean an alteration to the programming if the shift protocol is different to the camry and mr2 (which i doubt, toyota tend to keep these things the same).

Pm "goldy" over on TB,he invented the box and will be able to give a better answer.

i read this with interest as currently restoring my rev1 auto and would love to have this done on mine!

Question to paul would this make the v6 auto conversion possible with this system as i really want a v6 eventually?

yes indeed, thats the primary reason for the invention of it,to allow mr2 auto owners to go v6 with the added benefit of flappy paddles.

Bear in mind if you do go v6 you will lose your full auto mode though, this is the only way we can get a v6 and an auto to work, with flappy paddles,we cant do both ,so it will no longer be a full auto.

Only cars that have the standard engine will be able to have a switch that enables full auto or flappy mode.

if you can develop this to work with the soarers you will make a mint! biggest groan from most soarer owners was the lack of being able to select 3rd for rolling road tuning purposes. :thumleft:
