I've got a 235/40 on my 17" 7J rim. The fattest you can go I think, though the car doesn't grip as well as with the 225/35's, both are good year F1's I used.

Just looked on this website as you can check what speedo reading you will get when changing tyre/alloys and also it tells you what Alloys wheels sizes are need to fit each change of tyre size.

I was told that 235/40's were the widest too, by a tyre salesman.
