elite controller used with normal xbox?

Is this possible? When I press the "find controller" button on the xbox then press the "find xbox" button on the controller, it won't connect.

I thought they were the same? Or can't you connect an elite controller to a normal white xbox 360?

That's unusual, a 360 doesn't normally have reliability issues.
