Fitting Exhaust

Post by tom_snelling »

Is it essential to fit new gaskets where the exhaust bolts to the manifold?

Coating them in Firegum when fitting also helps to seal the join

I wouldnt use firegum, its not really needed and if it drys quickly without compressing the gaskets it can work lose and cause leaks.

If these are anything like the ones jinxy supplys then they are better then the toyota ones, they fit better and are slightly thicker.

...Anyone experience alot of white smoke shortly following an exhaust change?
Fitted mine yesterday and just been out for a proper run and when stopped at traffic lights or the like it's smoking a fair bit!
Certainly wasn't doing it before the swap...
Could it be burning exhaust paste maybe? Seeing as we might've been a little over zealous on the application of it...

White smoke is usually water so i'd give it a few miles as it may just be burning in. Its surprising how much moisture can get in the exhaust.

Could be I guess, it's second hand so goodness knows how long it's been sat around while the guy's been breaking his car.
It's just a little worrying sitting at traffic lights as smoke (or perhaps, steam) bellows out behind you!

It could be oil on the exhaust, this can take a couple hours to clear.

I also had a lot of white smoke coming from the manifold when I replaced it the day before yesterday. It also smelled nasty, seemed to be the heat shielding tape on the starter wiring harness that rested against the new manifold, check that it is clear or you could burn it.
