[Mk2] [Turbo] Just changed my thermostat and had to tell someone!

Post by wizzer »

As the title really, i'm not the most technical person on the planet, but having diagnosed (via the forum of course) that my thermostat wasn't working properly i've this morning replaced the thermostat and bled the coolant.

My problem was that the car was taking an age to get up to temperature, someone on here said it sounded like the thermostat was stuck open. So i ordered a new one, looked at lots of documents on here and this morning got stuck in. I started at about half nine and by half ten i actually had the new thermostat fitted! Then it was just a case of a trip to B&Q (in another car!) to get some piping to put on the bleed valves in the front to carry out the proper addition of the coolant which i lost.

The old thermostat that i took out was clearly fubar'd, as the new one was all tight and closed, the old one was loose and hanging almost in pieces!

I just want to get out now and give it a road test just have to wait for a shower engineer to come first!

just to let you know tho, it is 100000000 times easier to do this on a rev3+ engine than a rev2!!!

dipstick bolt is easier to get to, as well as the lower thermostat housing bolt!

on a rev1/2 it is a BLOOMING nightmare...

Glad you said that  I was thinking "WTF did I do wrong?" when James said it took an hour to do his on Rev3.

Took me about 2 hours on the Rev2. theres just one bolt thats a nightmare and wont go in but once it catches the threads and starts going in its the best bit of releif in the world lol

the knack, LOL.
I know the difference between the two, and it's massive.
Yes it is possible, just tougher to get to that particular bolt In comparison.

There are a ton of people who have come seriously close to rounding that bolt on the early revs due to the aircon in the way.

Well done for finding it so easy, congrats.

Thanks for pi$$ing on my chips and telling me how easy it was hehe. Am glad that there were no bolts that were stuck too solid or anything like that!

Temp guage seems to be working fine now, car heats up to proper temperature in a sensible amount of time!

is there a guide for this ,a "how to"mine needs done and i dont even know where it is (rev3 tubby),is it a take the cambelt off job .im guessing its right in amongst the water pump/timing belt.cogs?my neighbour who is a mech said its a piece of p1$$ ,iv changed thermostats b4 on other cars and its quite straitforward, but the turbo engine bay is a nass of pipes ,and i dont want to start it and find that im stuck halfway through 8-[ .i really would like to do this myself so i dont want him (my neighbour to do it as i quite like doing things myself 8)

rev3 thermostat is right beside the oil dipstick, look down there and you'll see it. Remove the pipes to and from the intercooler to get better access.

no pic's but have a look on your car, you'll see the water pipe / housing straight off. You don't need to remove the timing cover never mind the belt
