[Mk2] [Generic] New Suspension

Post by JohnnyC »

FAIL!

Got poly bushes to put on - bought 2 years ago.
Got springs (Eibach pro kit), droplinks, ordered various bits from Mr T, ordered TRD topmounts.

Now, shock absorbers...
Ordered these...
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m5b0s2392p0

I priced up new shocks from Mr T (which I believe are just KYBs anyway), and the camskill ones worked out at just £12 each cheaper - although that's £50 when getting all four so I ordered.

And I got these...
Image

Are these just inserts?

As you can see in the pic here, there's a full strut:
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... 2392p25713

This is what I got for the wifes FTO last year and they're cheaper than the little sticks I got:
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php? ... b0s585p416

Anyone know where I can get decent priced shocks (you know, that springs can actually sit on, and I can attach to my wheels :D ) ?

They'll have to go back. Surely I should have got more for the money?
Surely I wasn't supposed to know that they weren't the 'full' shocks, or am I just a noob?

Right, turns out that my (UK) rev5 has rebuildable struts.

But I'm not keen on the extra effort of removing the original (kyb) inserts and cleaning up the old struts.

Does anyone know if there's any difference between these gas inserts and the ones that Toyota sell (which they sell WITH the full strut for not alot more) - are they gas or oil shocks?

it's not much extra effort :? just need some stilsons or a very large spanner and vice.

not sure what the originals are but the gas shocks you have are better than "standard oil" :thumleft: (all shocks have oil btw)

It's not just that, you also need to fill the part the insert goes into with oil/coolant - although non of this was mentioned in the instructions with the inserts  Infact the instructions were some sort of unreadable generic picto-gram for loads of different suspension parts that kyb sell!!

C50 wrote:not sure what the originals are but the gas shocks you have are better than "standard oil" :thumleft: (all shocks have oil btw)

I've since found out that the standard (rebuildable) shocks don't have inserts (although you can put inserts in) - there's a piston and oil inside.

I don't doubt that gas shocks are better than oil. But as I'm replacing a lot of suspension bits - I just didn't want rusty struts letting the side down (and I don't know how well they'll scrub up - another reason why it'd be too much effort!).

Yeah, but they're yellow billies =P~

It seems that the only struts you can buy are either Toyota originals or Yellow Billies. Noone else sells any apart from inserts

yup, you do have to faff around to refurb them. I wanted rebuidable struts so had to source them and refurb them.

after you crack the nut off it's just oil, strut/ piston.

Camskill took back the 'inserts' no problem (they haven't updated their website though to make it clear though).

Anyway, here's a few pics of the new suspension...

Thanks to everyone that helped with some queries I had, especially PoohBear :thumleft:

And to Peter Gidden @ SBits, firstly for helping me with my front bushes that I couldn't quite get in, and rescuing me from a stuck brake bleed nipple 8)

New ball joints from SBits, splitter tool from Halfords (which ended up being taken back - it was made from monkey-metal)...
Image

Removing a stubborn ball joint
Image

The suspension bushes (bought in the group buy 2+ years ago  )
Image

No one told me removing 3 nuts/bolts would take several hours :D
Image

Bushes took a while to do, not just the removing, but also because I cleaned and painted them
Image

Then as I'd spent so long removing the lower arms & strut rods, I had to keep my car off the road while I had to go back to work - so I thought a few more days won't make much difference if I remove and clean and paint the rear subframe
Image

How wrong I was, whilst getting a lift to work from the wife, this happens (the woman driving behind looking down for something for her kid - FFS).
And my wife hadn't braked sharply, we'd been stationary at a set of traffic lights for several seconds!!)
Image

All back on
Image

Lovely
Image

The fronts, soooo much easier to remove than the rears :)
Image

New bushes fitted (more difficult than the rears, and fitting back on the car was a lot more difficult than the rears too)
Image

New springs (from larkspeed.com) :)
Image

New shock absorbers (from Toyota  )
Image

New TRD topmounts, see further below for differences between standard
Image

Old rear suspension removed
Image

Original vs TRD rear topmount:
TRD has shorter cup bit that goes slightly over the bump stop.
TRD has shorter threads - this is a negative, I had to remove my washers that were between my strut brace and the nuts holding the topmounts to the car)
Image

Some rear droplinks (from Camskill)
Image

Original vs Eibach rear spring
Image

New rears to go on
Image

New front spring cups (Toyota) + rubber bits
Image

TRD vs Original front topmount:
I could see no difference whatsoever (except that TRD topmounts from Fensport are around £47, Toyota's are around £76)
Image

Front suspension removed
Image

New fronts ready to go on
Image

Bit expensive   but should last a while.

Still need to get the alignment sorted...

If it's all back on again Johnny how are you getting on with it? I've just done similar and replaced topmounts, struts, springs and droplinks. Feels like a new car with no more rattles or crashes (the last set had done almost 190k) and surprisingly good ride. I've not done the bushes yet though...

Got to get the alignment sorted, but seems okay so far.

I bought the car when it was 3.5 years old - was surprised at how 'tight' it all felt. But it'd lost that now after a further 5 years - the bushes alone brought back that tightness :) Suspension isn't a massive improvement though, probably the only difference is due to the aftermarket springs.

Yes, workshop is clean, sssshhhhh
I asked Toyota for prices, and they said £80 per corner. However, when I ordered they'd for some reason cheaper - plus I got a discount on top of that, so I paid £252 for all 4 corners.

It's not been written off. Helps that it was 2001 model, therefore the cost of repair is a smaller percentage of the value.

aah good good, they couldn't find the value of my rear bumper(silly i know), i'm sure that's why they wrote it off, as the repairs did not exceed the value, honestly, it was a tiny dent!!!

Excellent stuff :thumleft:

I didn't realise you could get new full shocks from Toyota. How much did they cost as I need some (assuming they'll fit a rev3 turbo)

Cheers,
Matt

Price above :) £252, but make sure you ask for a discount if you do

The struts I got didn't have the exact same part numbers as what I gave to Toyota though, they had +1 added to each part number (48520-19056 for front-left, instead of 48520-19055 etc).

They seem pretty much identical though.

Although with you owning a rev3 turbo - yours never came with these (rebuildable) struts - although they'd fit fine.

Bear in mind that the turbo shocks are different from the uk spec ones as the turbo cars from rev2 onwards use gas filled billstein dampers. The uk cars got normal oil filled ones apart from the 10th aniversary cars which also got the billstein ones.

As a mild upgrade when my car was standard I swapped from the uk spec dampers to a set of standard billsteins and they are a tad stiffer than the other shocks.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I wondered if they were different to Black Billies.

Ideally I'd have Yellow Billies with stock Turbo springs. Not a fan of stiff suspension at all.
